I have just read a thread about a wonderful Indian supermarket in Chch and OH asked about fish & chip shops. We are hoping to settle in Rangiora/Kaiapoi (although Rangiora seems to winning at the moment) and OH is thinking about his belly as usual :D . Is there a good fish & chip in Rangiora - or even Kaiapoi? Not that this is the be all and end all but it is extra ammunition to persuade OH:p

Cant comment on any good ones in the two areas you're looking at but we feel on the whole "fush and Chups" are better over here and a lot cheaper than UK :D

Also they cook to order:D :D

Yes, I think they do chips better as they are not soggy, vinegar drenched floppy bits of rubber tubing. I like also how in a number of places you can get your fish pan-fried instead of deep-fried.
And kumara chips :)

There is a fush and chup shop on high street in Rangiora, but I have to confess that even after a year of living here we have never tried it. Hmmmmmmm this is something that I may have to remedie (sp)

We have a sushi bar, souvilaki (sp) bar, burger bar, two thai restaurants (one is a takeaway) Robbies (which is a pub restaurant), Chinese takeaway and a KFC!!!

I think this just might have swung OH in favour for Rangiora & NZ. Looks like Rangiora better prepare for a sudden influx in 2008 :laugh

the fish is much better in fish and chip shops.
Wharehou is superb fish. Thing is though, you wont find mushy peas or curry sauce. Or pukka pies.
One thing I really miss about uk is a decent chinese - NZ doesnt do chinese food and if it does then it stinks big time.

Well, no decent Chinese, I believe Ben has set himself a lifetimes work looking for Crispy Duck in Pancakes....

However, there is an Indian in Blenheim that does curry Mild, Medium, or Hot. And then when you tell them they ask "Indian Hot or Kiwi Hot...?"

Can't comment on area specifically, but I mus say the fush and chups here are lovely and inexpesive.....tip though mushy peas are expensive. We went to the chippy about three weeks ago and after I had paid, I sat there pondering and whispering to Graham 'Im sure they said fush and chips we're cheap on the forum'...after doing my calculations off the board I discovered it was the MUSHY PEAS that we're the culprits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Imported from the UK!!!!!!!

Strange comment on no chinese food, we regularly eat chinese food from a takeaway and it's really good and would recommend it (also cheap).

I'm actually suprised with the comments on chinese food as in Wellington region a lot of the fush and chip shops seem to be operated by chinese and with the high number of chinese people, would have expected a lot of choice and quality.

Guess like everywhere, depends on how many restaurants you have to choose from?

Or is it that the food served is not the same as UK chinese food? I know chinese restaurants don't have the same set menus in NZ that they have elsewhere.

Maybe it's a north island vs south island thing?

Fush and chups, generally yum, although I do miss soggy chips on occasion!

chinese food it depends on what seasonal vegetables are in, I have had a lovely one with capsicums and onions are in, but a not so nice one stuffed with broccoli & cauli! (and I like broccoli and cauli)

I think chinese food here is more authentic to its origins which we dont get in the UK....

For Fush and Chips, see NZ Best Fish 'n Chip Shop (http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/article.aspx?id=78476&fm=newsmain,nup), and it's in Christchurch.

We've an excellent Chinese take away 5 mins from us and very good value for money.

However what we've failed to find so far is Crispy aromatic duck

Rangiora town center also has

a couple of cafe bars ,Capones - a restaurant , a deli /coffee house , subway , for fish (fush) we like victoria st chippy & high st for chips , lily brook shops has chippy/burger bar & thai take away , the chinese in Victoria St does a uk style curry with 1/2 chips 1/2 rich much to Pauls delight - not had a try yet though.

robbies reminds us very much of UK style pub grub - we liked it when we arrived but now we find it rather Average .

The Amberley area has lots of nice eatery places Pukeko junction (our number 1 !!!) , Brew moon , nor'wester cafe(liquorice icecream yum) & just a little further north you hit winery territory :nice1 .

Since the demise of our beloved Akaroa fush and chup shop a year or so back we've been searching for a decent one - the Darfield one is awful and there's nothing else nearby.

Might have to try the Lyttleton one on our next trip over as it's won a NZ award.

Oh well, I guess it keeps the waistline trim(ish)....

And Chinese food - hmm, not impressed down here in Chch - it's average imho. A bit hit and miss - I prefer the Japanese food in Chch. I am, however, constantly craving crispy duck and have joined Ben's expedition....

Dropped in to Rangiora yesterday desperately searching for somewhere open to eat (yeah, I know, it was NY Day!) but there was a bar open (opposite Blockbusters - it's like a Speights Ale House) which we had a snack in and it was really quite nice!

From Rangiora you can also drive out to Route 66 in Cust (lovely food and cute craft shop), or further along to Jo Seagar's and Cafe 51 in Oxford :nice1

I'm dying to try Pukeko Junction (nr Amberley) after a few friends have recommended it.

I have to admit that the curry I had in Nelson was the best I have EVER had. And I've had a few.

Will never go back on my chinese statement though. Tried several and its like eating watery poo.

I really miss my chinese style special curry from the UK - yum !
Ok, so its not authentic chinese - its british chinese - so therefore its almost become a distinct style in itself ...:D

We have yet to find a decent chinese takeaway here in Hamilton. We were however up in Paihia over the New Year and found a fairly good one there -lots of variety and good value for money. I think it was called King Wah.
