We have had our EOI Selected and Andy is worried about when he should tell his company about it. :cool :cool :P

ie What is the time frame for NZimmigration contacting your employers to check it out (did put a note on the EOI to say we had not informed them and to let us know first).

Andy feels he wants to give his company as much time as possible to find a replacement, and not leave them in the lurch.

So any ideas on timescales from Selection to contact by officials, Successful and ITA.

ThaNKS :nice1

Me too, so I started using the search function because I've posted so many questions in the past that I always feel sure I'm repeating myself :laugh

Sounds like you need to start getting ready for bed.

I feel we have done the first hurdle the EOI and getting selected and now it is a whole new ballgame.

When do I start selling all the acculated stuff in the house, looking for jobs, planning flights.

We have a skiing holiday, 2 week family holiday in inlaws and I want a holiday with my family to fit in before we go, Rhiannon still needs to go to school and we need to come over for interview and a look around.

All that and Andywants tomove by about June. (IMPOSSIBLE).

AHHHHHHHHHg

We sold up house and "stuff" almost 3 mths before we even put in an EOI - we'd already decided we were going :laugh

June doesn't sound impossible at all!! Save your hols for here! Easily tied in with school holidays perhaps? Leave for NZ and have a couple of months hols :nice1

Last ski in Europe,

65 birthday family hol with mother in law, (1 week disney, 1 week cruise).
who thinks we are trying to see her off by taking away her only grandchild. She keeps saying things to Rhiannon if she asks a question like, "You don't know if you are going yet." and getting pannicy every time Rhiannon is a bit worried. We have told Rhiannon to tell us any worries, it is normal, and we will answer the questions. Friends seems to be the main one "will i make any".

Then I want a short holiday with my parents (although they drive me crazy), nice for them to have a hol with her before we go, Mum is 70 so don't know how often she would come over.

Then the trip to NZ to checkit out and get interviews. Then the final move.

I think move during the kids holidays, I know it would be winter there and we would miss having a summer, but it would give us time to look at schools with kids in them, and settle on a place, also, skiiing at weekends would be a perk. Plus seeing a country during winter, can sometimes be depressing to start with, but as the homesickness came in the weather would be brightening. (I hope).

Gone slightly off track but I know where you are coming from. Hopefully meet you in the summer.

Jo,
I am at the ITA stage of the process, just about to send it back to NZIS in the next couple of weeks. With regard to informing employers about your intentions. I was having the same dilema, but decided to come clean. I have been with the company for some 18 yrs now and felt the loyalty bit nagging at the back of my mind. I notified the HR dept: and contacted the Director in charge of the side of the business I work in for a reference. I get along with the bloke very well. This was done at the selected stage back in August. To the best of my knowledge NZIS still haven't contacted my point of reference or the HR dept:. I have asked quite a few times now !
I know it doesn't really help you, but just thought I'd share what I have experienced so far with NZIS and them checking work references and experience.

Cheers and Good Luck

When to tell your employer??????? :nice1

I like it! Seriously, i would just go with the flow, but bear in mind if his employer was thinking of getting rid of him, would he stop to think when would be the best time. I don't think he would. :no
I remember a Senior Officer in the Ambulance Service which i served for, for 15 years saying to me that loyalty these days count for nothing and i have taken that on board eversince.
I told my present employer immediately, only because i was looking for a transfer (HGV driver for TNT) and this was possible. But since i have sorted myself with another company, but they are aware i will be dropping the bombshell that i will be leaving as soon as my house is sold :hopeso and they are fine about it and quite envious.
I don't think there is a good time, just jump in and do that deed especially if you are 100% or more committed to moving to NZ and not thinking of backing out at the 11th hour.

Good luck

Kim

I would say the night before you fly, though i would say wait till the fat lady sings then tell them, anything can happen and it usually does, Not only could he be pushed, passed over for promotion it could all end with the preverbiale egg on yer face. I told few until at least my meds some still don't know.

I would say that Danpoll has it right. I wouldn't volunteer any info until you have everything sorted on the visa department. Its very dependent on your employers and how they will react but I will also second the opinion above that loyalty counts for nothing in business. I have a feeling that I read here somewhere that a lot of people have found that their present employers haven't been contacted for information.

I'm not sure about the UK, but here in the US there are quite a few states that use "at-will" employment. Basically they can sever your employment for any reason at any time (as long as it is discrimination based). Happened to me, one Monday morning my boss brought me into my CFOs office and gave me the "thank you for playing" speech. Likewise an employee can quit at any time without there being any negative reprecussions. Of course you probably won't be working back at that company in the future, but they can't say anything inflamatory against you for it.

Like above, I would give notice, but damn the company and look out for your own interests. I understand the basic human need to feel for the company at the loss of you (a very productive employee) but deep down it's still a business and if they can let you (a senior, well paid individual) go and replace you with a lower paid kid straight from Uni, then this gives them reason to do so.

Depends on if you want to be 'yesterday's man' only for the duration of your statutory notice period or for maybe 3 or more months :? IMO I do feel that once you've handed in your notice it's a lonely time with regard to the comradeship you've shared with your colleagues while you were still part of the 'team'. No matter what position you hold in a company, once you say you're leaving, everything starts to operate as if you've already left. I've seen this from both sides and it was a real eye opener when it was my boss who was leaving. I used to think only the 'minions' got this but two days after he handed in is notice he was being left out of meetings. :uhoh DH has told his employer about his plans but I won't until absolutely necessary.

Personally I don't intend to say anything until the day I have my PR, sell the house, book the flights and hand my notice in, but I guess it's a personal choice and that choice could be greatly influenced by the type and size of company you work for.

In my case what difference is one person going out of 120,000 going to make? The only thing that is likely to be impacted is my career if I announce my plans and something goes wrong.

I'm giving three weeks notice. Before that, not a word.

That said, since I'm not going the EOI/Skilled Migrant route, no one will tell my employer unless I do.

You asked " Bubbles Your reply was kwick, are you in a cluster group for employment, or did you have a job."

All I can tell you is my job is on the POL. I am an Electro/Mechanical maintenance and diagnostics dude. I submitted my EOI listing my original qualifications as Turner/Fitter-Toolmaker. I have no job offer as yet.

I agonised about telling my (Good) employer that I was considering leaving for quite a while (The reason is largely irrelevant to your employer - it is just another problem to solve ie replace you).

Don't tell them until you are certain you are going. At the end of the day their loyalty is to the business and not you.

Emigrating as a reason to depart sweetens bitter pill (you're not going to a competitor) but it doesn't change the effect your departure has.

Left work 2 weeks ago - been working 7 days a week since trying to organise to go in 3 weeks time

Thanks for your replies

General opinion is don't tell, I just hope that they phone us before ringing them, if they do.

I sort of agree, people treat you differently when you are leaving, and it can take a while to sort things out.

If he has to tell, perhaps we just move and complete stuff later from NZ, but that is scarey.

Jo,
Like I keep telling people at work when they ask " so when are you going ? "

Alot can happen between now and then, nothing is set in stone until I get my hands on them little visas.

I have merely informed them of my intentions of trying to migrate, I have not put my notice in as yet. I dare say it will happen though, when the time is right.

That's a dilemma we have too. Was interested to read the link on this topic previously, but does anyone know if they only contact the Princiapl Applicant's employer or would they contact all, including myself and my daughters?

I believe they only contact the principle applicants employers.

I thought I'd bring this thread back to the front again as it's very relevant to my situation at the moment.

I'd previously posted here that saying that telling my employer was the very last thing I'd do. However that was before I'd checked my contract and realised I needed to give three months notice :laugh

Now I've told just about everyone but still haven't handed my notice in, mostly because of our dependancy on selling the house to go and the English property laws.

It's a good feeling though as they can't do much (the flip side of the 3 months notice is that they must give me 6 months notice)

Of course I'm professional enough to work my **** off until I do go :laugh
