You won't believe what I've just done...!!!!!!!!
As most of you Brits will know, you just can't buy Hellmanns Mayonnaise from the NZ supermarkets, but Best Foods Mayonnaise which you can readily buy in NZ tastes (and probably is) exactly the same.
Well, there I was, shopping in our local Aussie supermarket when low and behold, on the shelf I spied Hellmanns Mayonnaise...Eureka!!!! :D
I was just about to pop it into my trolley when I thought "Hang on, what if it isn't really Hellmanns ?? Mmmm - better the devil you know. I'll take a Best Foods too, just in case." :uhoh
Anyone else ever done something similar or is it just cynical old me?

We have Hellmann's mayonnaise in our local supermarket (New World). Are we just very unusual up here? :D
(Just dipped my finger in the pot - doesn't taste the same to me, but I have had a couple of glasses of sav blanc....)

I am just so suggestible when I've had some wine....:D
It's a bit blurry and out of focus - or is that just because of the wine? On the back it says it's a product of USA and is imported by James Crisp Ltd in Auckland.

Tried to take a photo and post it, but you lot know how useless I am with attachments, so just take my word for it when I say I tried !!!
Well, I have just dipped my finger in the pot and yes, it's the real deal...
Looked on the label JoJo and mine says (and I quote...LOL)
'By appointment to Her Majesty The Queen. Unilever, BESTFOODS, UK., Crawley.'
So I would have saved myself a few bucks just by buying the Best Foods one in the first place...:laugh :laugh :laugh
Think I'll stick to wine sampling in future !

Oooh, mine is made by Unilever Bestfoods too, but not for the Queen. Humph. I have no idea how much it cost, either, but I'm pretty sure it was cheaper than the wine....

Talking of which, I used to love my NZ Pinot Gris and I can't find that anywhere...:no
Think it may take a lot of samplings before I find something as good, but I'll persevere.......:laugh
Maybe I should have waited 'til the effects of the previous samplings wore off before I started this silly thread ...

Hellmans is identical to Best Foods. In the US, it's called Hellmans "east of the Rockies", and Best Foods "west of the Rockies". It's well distributed internationally. When I lived in East Africa, I could find it in a precious few places, However, with no refrigerator, that meant eating the entire jar the same day. I can't believe my arteries survived that attack!

I used to work for Unilever when they acquired BestFoods to become Unilever BestFoods (UBF for short). Unilever owned the Hellmanns brand and BestFoods owned the BestFoods brand. UBF now owns both brands.
The contents of both jars will be the same formula and is typically made regionally - for example there is only 1 European factory making Hellmans for all European countries. Any variation in flavours will come from the source local ingredients such as the eggs.

I've bought Best Foods jars off the shelf in the past and was surprised to read on the label "Made in Canada".
I always knew they were the same company even buying the same jars back in Canada. It's like a god sent to be able to buy it here in NZ and I don't like the NZ "ETA" brand of mayo at all... despite how my aunt likes to believe all NZ made food stuff is superior to the imported brands.
At $10 for the large jar, i don't expect many kiwis would buy it.
