Is a return ticket required when landing in NZ with :

a) PR
or
b) A temp work visa

and if yes, does any ticket out of NZ suffice e.g. a short(er) hop to Oz than back to the UK ?

if you have PR you do not need a return ticket. If you have a work visa- it depends on the length of the visa. If the work visa is over a year, you do not need a return ticket, but if it's under a year then you may need a return ticket. I've heard of some people who didn't need one with lengths of stay around 9 months, but any less then that and I'm sure you'll need to get a return ticket.

To enter on a one way ticket with a temp work visa, there needs to be "outward passage waived" on your visa conditions :yes I'm assuming it will be apended somewhere on your visa sticker in your passport.

If it is a WTR visa you don't need a return ticket. At least that is what I was told.

Apparently yes to this question above, as long as you have the necessary visa in place for the country to which you have a ticket booked.

Hot off the press here in Heathrow. No PR so need a return ticket and if it's a visitors visa it has to be within 6 months - unlike the ticket Air NZ sold me two weeks ago because the PR hadn't come through yet. It was a 12 months ticket and they wouldn't let us on so i had to go and get it changed. That was simple though.

This would be a big problem for a cheap "no changes allowed" ticket right? Luckily most allow the change, some with a fee incurred though. I wonder if the return date of the ticket should be 3 months for non-British passport holders?

ah thats interesting - i must query this further - we expect PR to come through only a couple of weeks after landing on the temp visa - we basically need to get there to secure the job :raebanana
