The new series has started on BBC1 today. 9.15am.
This series has lots of people going to New Zealand and trying it out for a week, job, houses, etc.
Just thought some people might find it interesting.
The couple today were in Dunedin, on Friday they are in Christchurch.
Strangely tomorrows is in Perth? Thought that was Oz.......perhaps they didn't get enough applicants to do a whole series on NZ potentials.

Yes, it was nice to watch this morning.
I loved the part when they went out in the Otago countryside, and the voice-over said something like "but can it live up to their beloved Scottish Highlands?". Errrrr....... :nice1

Just watched the ChCh one.
Have to say it was "edited for TV" rather than realistic, but it was good to see some parts of ChCh again.
Watching it was very emotional, especially seeing the messages from the parents/grandparents.
Can't wait to get there now.

According to the tv listings the one on Monday is in Aukland, but the rest of the week is Austrailia.
I enjoyed the CH CH one today but agree it seemed a bit contrived.

Same here, quite emotional. We did feel tho that it was very watered down 'snapshot' of ChCh, we were shouting at the TV as they missed whole chunks!
It does annoy me on this series and the last, that they NEVER go into any detail on schooling, it is afterall a 'family' move but they neglect to go into schooling, all they did was show the tartan school uniform and the two kids didnt like it and that was that!
I suppose one upside of not showing ChCh and Canterbury in all its glory, is that maybe not so many people will look at moving there leaving more room for those of us who do lol.
Btw, are that family on this forum??

Got to say, can't stand the way they keep repeating the programme scenes, seems like they were short of content. Also it must have been hard to go for 1 week and not be jetlagged for 3 of the 5 days of filming. Free holiday though.

Been taping the show and watching it with OH on an evening and what strikes us is how much equity the families have to take over. Are these your average UK imports (making us very poor by comparison) or have the shows producers only picked families who can afford big houses with no mortgage!
What the show does touch on though is the low wages offered in most proffesions. I did laugh when the guy the other night asked the estate agent while looking around a house "no double glazing"!!!lol:laugh

I don't know whether watching this is a good idea or not. I'm so passionate about moving but the two families I've seen in NZ programs seem not to be able to get past the negatives.
I've got big enough colly wobbles at the moment anyway, job offer in place but no sniffs at the house yet. Please please house selling fairy, come visit soon :uhoh
Alos watching the families viseo messages.... my mum is going to be so much more emotional thatn any of them. We even managed to have a big arguement and fall out just before christmas because of it. Luckily managed to call a truce so festive period went ok but it's still there lurking in the background:no

Dunedin looks amazing but i notice that they didnt mention the weather on this show as thats the only thing that puts me off dunedin and points me towards christchurch!
A much better program this time, pity i missed the christchurch one, but it says the program on monday is also new zealand so cant wait for that :)

I get really frustrated with the programme, I think that the families should do much more research before being allowed to take advantage of such a great opportunity - and then waste it!!
One woman commented on how the living areas were all open plan- der, if she'd had even a brief look on a property web site, this would have been made blatantly obvious.
The vet really got my goat (no pun intended!!), it doesn't take much research to know that wages are less, residual income is, generally less, and ofcourse he would no longer be a senior partner - He doesn't own a part of the practice in NZ!!!!
Maybe I'm just jealous and maybe more went on off camera, and maybe I'm just frustrated with still being here waiting to sell the house and go, mentally I'm already there, it's like being in a waiting room and being told that the person you're waiting to see, has had to go out and no one's sure when they'll be back!!!

I think it is wrong of the programme makers to be showing these people houses that are well out of their price range. It says what they can go up to then the subsequent houses are all £50k+ above. In the recent Australia one (Thursday) they did show them a house in their price range but it was awful - needed a hell of a lot of work etc... My FIL (who is not keen on our move - understatement) saw the Chch one and said that there was no way we could afford the property - he said this to my son, not us. That was because the family had £400k to take with them and they were still showing them properties over their budget. Gives a false impression. Mind you, if this puts some people off going it leaves more room for us :D

Hi Nicky. Firstly, I don't mean to pick your quote but I can't copy them all:nice1
Just to say, I have seen another forum that has these families on it and they did say that it was very edited and the gondala moment was due to the cameraman keeping on pushing the girls - a little unfair. A lot of the 'dumber' moments were from editing and there was a lot more that was unseen.
But, ultimately they are moving to ChCh this month. So it looks like it was worth it. :D

I've watched all these programmes on the NZ version (haven't bothered with the Aus ones). And have to agree some of them seem very niave.
The midwife couple I think have either gone or are about to go.
The vet couple seemed to have a fanstatic lifestyle already, as soon as this programme started I said to OH 'they won't go' so no surprise their then.
The army couple though, seemed really nice people and I warmed to them instantly and they seemed well clued up. Dunedin looked just like the UK.
Was it me or did it look a bit chilly (think it's filmed in winter)
Although how could they manage to afford a £200k house with £120k fund. £80k mortgage on £25k salary @8plus percent???
My daughter who does not want to contemplete moving was quite impressed with the school though, the cleanliness of it and a gym!!!
It's a pity they haven't got couples who are looking at Nelson or Wellington or some of the less well known areas, maybe their will be later on?

Hi Sharon,
Napier itself looked really nice, everywhere looked clean, quiet and people seemed friendly. The town itself was so different to the usual run of the mill towns, but as described in the books,it reminded me of the film Back to the future!!!.Nothing negative was said about it but unfortunately the family all voted for England.Once they arrived they thought it was too quiet and the wife thought that teaching wasnt as stimulating as back in England, even the outdoor sporty life didnt appeal.I did wonder what they were expecting, whether they had done any reaserch, they seemed to just want to live near a beach. The whole Life down under series has been really good eye opener, everything we expected and more, having never visited New Zealand it has been very interesting.I would certainly love to visit Napier,in fact do a tour around New Zealand to see all of its beauty.

I knew from the start that they wouldn't go. They never seemed really commited to it from the start - it seemed more of an idea than anything else . I suppose with younger children it is harder to take them away fromtheir grandparents but older kids do have their own problems (as I am finding out!!) Still good to see different parts of NZ. As we are going to the Chch area we haven't really looked at the NI much. It was just about quiet enough for me, not a city person at all - hence the move to NZ.

Wonder what part of the year they were in Napier as it looked really cold?
Did seem a bit strange to me that their main issues were that it was a bit too quiet for them, they could surely try other parts of NZ that are busier?
I've watched a few of the episodes now and don't understand why the parents and friends seem to be so upset after such a short period of time, they are only in NZ for a week surely these people have been on holiday longer than a week before?

Hi Sharon,
The programme showed Napier in a very good light and exactly the reason why we fell in love with it when we were over there! What I really liked about the programme was the fact that it wasn't a typical NZ tourism programme/advert and actually showed Napier when it was overcast as well as sunny. It just made me want to pack my bags and head over right now! I'm sure you friends and family would have been very impressed!
We are heading to Napier in September and hoping to find a rental when we get there (that will take our dog!). Don't have any jobs lined up but already have our PR so we are hoping to get over and then start looking.
Glad you are really happy over there and I'll have a look at your blog sometime!

I've noticed that a lot of the people on this programme (i've now started to watch the Aus ones) all seem to think 'they'll miss the pub'. I just can't get my head around those comments, I couldn't care less if I never went in a pub again, then again I haven't been in a pub in 18 months and I've just given up alcohol but only for 4 months.

Did anyone watch today's episode? The family visited Rotorua, and despite banging on a bit about the smell and the lack of central heating they seemed to quite like it. I've got to admit I was watching intently since Rotorua is where I'm heading, so I was looking at the properties with interest, imagining myself with all that space, oh, and making mental notes to visit the Polynesian Spa.
I am a bit critical of the programmes in places, the editing is a bit misleading I think, but then it is entertainment, overall I've been enjoying the series. Interestingly next week they're revisiting the families from the first series (who were all looking at Oz unfortunately) to see what happened to them. I think those programmes may well be worth a look at as well.

They STILL didn't mention schools though!!! A big majority of families have to contend with at least one child who is not sure about the move and yet they never take them to a local school, let them meet other kids who have made the move or local kids!!!!!
It's all very well letting a parent try out a job for a day, but what about the kids!!!
When I saw the one with the single parent, I thought they would send the kids to the school, and use after school clubs but no, they had them with a baby sitter all day:mad:
If only they would have asked the opinion of people who are planning the move.........
