Hi and welcome to the forum, you may want to introduce yourself in the introductions section e.g. where you are currently located may help the advice given.

There's already loads of info regarding Wellington on the forum, try using the search option and see what you can find.

Before any advice on best locations etc would need some more info really.
Do you want the night life, beach, bush, center of town etc, what sort of house and how much will you be able to afford (buy or rent). Can you drive and how far do you want to commute, will it be peak times or off-peak?

There are plenty of options in and around Wellington, so sure there would be something that meets your needs.

If your not sure where you want to live in Wellington the best bet is to rent a place furnished for the first month or so. This takes the pressure off and allows you to find the kind of place that you are looking for.

In Wellington to have choices about:
walking distance to a beach or up in the hills
view (and wind) or sheltered but no view
to commute or not

You really need to explore the city to find what area you want to live in.

In terms of an initial rental I would suggest a furnished apartment.
You can find some options here:
http://www.bookabach.co.nz/__Wellington_City.cfm

or on trademe here:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/CategoryAttributeSearchResults.aspx?search=1&mcat=0350-5748-4233-&sidebar=1&132=FLAT&selected135=&selected136=&134=15&135=47&136=&153=furnished&29=Apartment&122=0&122=0&59=0&59=0&x=65&y=10

or I have a quality two bedroom fully furnished apartment on Webb Street for rent at very reasonable rates. It's complete with carpark, appliances, is sunny and you can walk from it anywhere in the central city. Its a designer apartment designed by one of Wellington's best architects and has a 5m stud so it doesn't feel like a hotel room - email rental@zebrafish.co.nz if you want to know about it. Available long or short term.

Best of luck

It's all a matter of taste. If you were asked the same question in your home town you would get so many different answers. We spent ages looking for rented as we were looking for the ideal place.......not so ideal when we moved in. It was very hard to heat and therefore expensive. We luckly moved out 4 weeks later into a house that was really cosy.....but no sunshine. Now having bought we are in a completely different area as its was what was availalbe to our requirements at the time.

When you are over here I would recommend you know where NOT to live and look around all the other areas that have houses avail in your price range.

Check out www.justpropertymanagement.co.nz could not fault all the properties they showed us with regards to cleanlyness and maintenance.

We too are a couple who enjoying eating out, walking, but peace when we are at home. Rural ish location but only 15 mins into town by car and yes we got all of those in Wilton.

PM me if you want honest NO go areas that I know of, as I do not want to offend anyone who lives there now.:roll by listing my opinions and that is all they are.

You'll have lots of excellent choices in all of the catagories you mentioned. Some people seem to have difficulty finding adequate rentals. I guess it depends on what your expectations are, but if your resonably flexible there are places to be had. There are lots of neighborhoods with different personalities. I think Karori, Kelborn, and Wilton all have very appealing sections. Pay attention to heating costs. Be sure the place you get into has lots of sunny exposure. Good luck.

you can also check out island bay, wellington. spacious place, flat lands (not hills) so kids can ride bikes around, also very near to the beach.
