Just wondering if I can do that. I will eventually obtain a full work permit but just wondering if I can. Would love to bring my car over full of clothes etc which would hopefully be cheaper than carrying it over on the plane.

Yes you can import a car on a visitors visa, but not sure that you would want to? You would not qualify for concessionary entry so would have to pay duty to import the car.

It is also not recommended to bring personal possessions inside the car, see Personal Belongings in Vehicles (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Motor+Vehicles/Personal+Belongings+in+Vehicles.htm) for reasons.

A few other links that you may find useful:- When no Customs charges apply (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Motor+Vehicles/When+No+Customs+Charges+Apply.htm) and Importing a Vehicle (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/importing/)

I think that is only if it isn't in a container. Ours was in a container, we had a number of boxes in it, and no problems with the stuff at all, in fact I wish we'd actually filled it more...

Now getting our car 'compliant' seems to be another matter (thinking of opening a poll asking 'which car mechanic is more likely to rip me off - the UK or NZ one?), but that is an issue specific to ours, as it is a left hand drive.

So far, I've found importing my car meant lots of running around and carrying large folders with an ever increasing amount of documents with me. Also, if you import your car, don't do it just before Christmas.

You will get charged import duty on the vehicle...check the amount out beforehand as the extra cost might pay for you to rent a vehicle (and cars are also cheap to buy in NZ) as well as buy extra provisions. Then you will just look back and wished you'd travelled light, which is usually the best way to travel.

my car came in a container with my furniture, I came as visitor,, I had to pay a fee for the car and got it back when resideny/workvisa came thru if it did within a time frame (6months?) was some years ago so might not work same way today.

if you don't get your visa/resdiency or leave the country within that time frame then the fee paid was lost.
(same again, was a couple of years ago so might not work same way,,and was a gamble to get papers in time)

personal belongings in car: I was told that it was not allowed to fill up the car since it would make it hard to inspect and spray at arrival.
I had a container with car at the bottom and a mezzanine floor built on top of the car and all boxes and furniture over the car,, and a insurence to cover if it would be rough sea and mezzanine would cave in.

Had no problems with this at all, and at no point did anyone say that I shouldn't have.

Who told you this?

The moving company that I used.
It was a large company that the major/large companies in scandinavia use when sending families abroad worldwide on contracts.
I was told that cars were supposed to be t-o-t-a-l-l-y empty and clean.
I had spare parts for the car that I left behind since I would otherwise have to pack in separate boxes and the container was already full with furniture so they would have had to use a shoe horn to get more stuff in.
I thought I could just pack small spare parts in the trunk but was told no.
