Hi all,
I have now been over here continuous for 4 months now and Caroline 6 months. The funny thing is Carolines health has got worse and mine has got better, much better.
Caroline's allergies have got a lot worse over here but that will not make her return.
I on the other hand have had a dramatic improvement in my health.
I have been an insulin dependent Diabetic for 37 years and when I came here 4 months ago I was taking 20mg twice a day of blood pressure tablets and 180 units of insulin a day.
Now just 4 months later, I take no blood pressure tablets at all and take only 100 units of insulin a day. The doctor puts it down to less stress over here and the fact that I now do things that I enjoy doing. I am feeling far more healthier here than I ever was in the UK.If Caroline could only sort out her allergy problems then I am sure she will benefit as otherwise her health is ok.The doctor told her that NZ has a very high rate for allergies.Anyway we will sort it out.
I was just wondering how others health has been affected by the move. Better or worse or the same?

Regards

Dave and Caroline

My health hasn't been in question as such, but i have been treated by the physio on quite a few occasions in the last 2 years, ranging from a torn quad through to a damaged hand, whereas the wife's diabete's has reared its ugly head a little more, so she is under Sport Waikato to try and get onto a programme of sorts. The youngest has lost around a stone and a half, but that was due to a very bad virus she picked up in the first 3 weeks of arriving fortunately she has managed to keep what she lost off.

I have put a lot of weight on since being here too..........must be contentment, or at least thats my excuse! Unsure of just about how much but would guestimate a stone at least....... my downfall is the muffins at the cafe in work at morning tea............ irresistible!

Need to think of some excercise too........loads of clothes i brought over with me just dont want to fit anymore........... and i am not liking the 'new' me so much either.

My daughter suffered from really bad headaches in the UK and had to wear very dark glasses to try to reduce them even in bright light, let alone sunlight . Over here much brighter light but never see her with the dark glasses and no headaches.

Our 16 year old had childhood asthma, dormant since she was about 2-3 years old, but it has come back over here, partcularly in colder weather.
I think I have put on about 5 pounds in the year we've been here, and am running/walking daily. I suspect it's the wine!

My health is the same, my partner has much less hayfever, my youngest daughter has less conductive hearing loss and colds.

In the UK both my wife and my son suffered from hay fever, We've been here (Whangarei) 4 months now and it hasn't shown it's ugly head at all, but my allergy to Manchester United has got worse as every time I turn on Sky Sports it's showing them !! when are they going to show some decent football, sorry soccer, i.e League One and Leeds United...? cheers Andy B

My excema on the whole is alot better here, although I do have flare ups on particularly humid days. My asthma and allergies are much better now i'm living in a more modern house that is not damp, and as a family we have suffered way less colds etc since arriving here. I put this down to less stress personally and also there are much fewer occasions when we are in large crowds of people, so we are less likely to pick up bugs aswell.

Would that be the same Leeds that Hereford united dumped out of the cup then ??:D :D
How bizarre to watch the first game from Edgar Street here in NZ having spent many a freezing day in my youth on those terraces :D

I find i catch the flu once or twice each winter for two or three days. In Scotland, I just never got ill. I think it's my immune system still trying to cope with the Southern Hemisphere bugs.

I've put on a few kilos as well, but regular runs round One Tree Hill are starting to combat that.

Don't read this if you're eating your lunch.... but our daughter suffered from repeated breakouts of verrucaes in the UK. Many visits to the Chiropodists, many pounds spent on the latest 'miracle zapper'.

Lo and behold, we come to NZ spend time at the beach, in the sea and living in Jandals at home and at school.....vanished!!!! Yippeee

Hubby had like a sweat rash in Uk on chest, which raised its ugly head from time to time but was very faint.

A few weeks ago, he came home, his chest was plastered in a red angry rash....... he found it so irritable. I convinced him to go to Drs and lo and behold he was told he has psoriasis.

He saw two Drs already about this that told him it was sweat rash.

Thankfully, with the aid of a steroid cream it has gone again.

Poor thing, he felt quite embarassed about it!

my daughter got allergy related ezcema that only flare up during spring/summer then clear up completely during winter. I don't know how much to compare with UK/NZ cos she was 9months old when we move to NZ.
Eliot also got ezcema too, i was expected that anyway because my first two had it as baby.
However I notice my OH's back which usually flare up badly which make him very itchy during late winter/early spring in UK (don't know why during feb and march in UK) but not had it since we move to NZ.

For whole family's health, I would say it is improved because I felt that NZ is more allergies aware than UK that they prepare to make food from scratch for us to ensure there is no egg in it. So my children had less allergy reactions experiences than we were in UK.

What are you using on Elliots ezcema? Our little one has developed it round his chin and neck again. Been slapping on loads of emollient, but it isn't really clearing up this time :(
