Hi ther my name is Zelda,OH-Gary and our 10 yr old Luke. We are at the very first start of what seems to be a very long procedure. My OH is a dentist and I have looked through all the forums to see if there is anyone else in the same position. My first query is how big is the demand for dentist in nz and where would be the first place to find out about the steps we need to take.
Our son has some learning problems and although not diagnosed "we" suspect he has some OCD problems. He goes to a independent school so class sizes are small and can cope but I am unsure he might not cope in nz. We would like to go at the stage when he goes to high school so about 18 months do I need to get cracking as I don@t know how long this all takes. So sorry first time on here and so many questions already hope I have not frightened anybody away.

I bet like any country in the world, dentists are a rare commodity and you shouldn't have any trouble finding hubby a job. Good luck. If your son has OCD that may be a bit tricky in the medical certificate to hide. Ask the doctor who assesses him what they think. Phone the NZ immigration office of standards for medical fitness tests. Hope that might help you.

Hi there thanx for the reply. I will look into it and call my doctors. We are currently in devon in the uk but originalyy both from Durban in SA. I have looked at a lot of employment sight and they do not have much for dentists. And therfore do not know how easy we are going to find a job for hubby. We are looking at Auklnd and north of that. If any one has any more ideas that would be great. Thanx Zelda

Check NZIS's website to see if dentists are on the short- or long-term skills shortage list.

Hi Plymgirl and welcome to the forum! My own view on OCD (having a son who suffers from it) is not that it is something that would be picked up on a medical, but also is not something that would be a problem as it doesn't need ongoing medication (although my son was on Prozac for a few years). It's a tough thing to live with and I wish you all the very best.

Barb

PS. also spent a number of years in Durbs!

Hi there Barb
Thanx for the reply. That is why I included about my son's problem as I do not know if the huge change will be better or worse for him as stress is the main thing that sets him off. He does not work in uneven numbers and everything the one hand does so must do with the other. It probably sounds mad to any one else but he is an only child and therefore gets alot of attention from us. Thanx so much for that info about the medical. He has not had any treatment for this yet and now I am unsure how far to push this now with the doc. Cheers for now Zelda
