Job offer received in early December for wind energy consulting engineering job in Wellington, EOI submitted last week, mover came today to count how much "stuff" we have (about 4000lbs, about 1/4 of which is books :), rabies test for dog on Wednesday...Wow, it is happening!

I've chosen to go for permanent residence via the Skilled Migrant Category (I have 185 points) right off the bat. Hoping to arrive in NZ and begin work at the end of May. Has anyone else tried this tack? How well did it work, and how long did it take until you received a PR visa? If the PR does not come through before beginning of May, my strategy is to submit an application for a Work Visa, which would then hold me over until the PR is complete.

Thoughts?

The sheer number and complexity of preparations is more than a little overwhelming...but good to see some things are coming together. Sometimes I wonder if I'm going to wake up and NZ was just a dream and I was just kidding myself... But no, this is going to happen. :)

Hi David, welcome to the rollercoaster :laugh

The time taken for a PR is based on many factors way too complex to try to work out, but with a job your application will be fast tracked and there are others on the forum who have been granted a PR in around 2 months so your timescale is very doable.

For what it's worth, I think you have chosen the best option.

You will need to get all the paperwork sorted and ready including the medical and police checks so that you can submit the ITA as soon as possible.

If you need any support or answers to questions etc then post away, there is always someone who can help.

From the US you need at least 6 months from the first rabies titre test. Who will be looking after your dog for that time? Is he already microchipped?

Make sure you're following these requirements: http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/domaniic.spe.htm

And congrats!

Hey David and welcome to the forum
Can't help with timescales much as we are in the UK so things may differ in USA but thought our signature may help showing dates of submissions of paperwork etc

Best of luck :)

hi David

I'm from the US also. I received PR (Oct. 06) with fewer points than you have, before I had a job offer and before I arrived in New Zealand, so I would think you're in good shape for making the end-of-May target date.

Agree with Ian that it's good to get the NZIS paperwork going as soon as possible since medical and police checks can sometimes be the bottlenecks --

Congrats on your job offer:clap

Thanks all! I am encouraged. Will definitely check out medical and police check requirements ASAP.

Yes, we've got the rabies vacc. and microchip done. We haven't broken the news to them yet, but our neighbors will be watching Dorothy in the 2 months or so after we leave...

okay- just make sure they follow the last month's vet work.

And a lot of people from the US have used international pet transport- http://www.iptlax.com/ and they're who I'm using when I transport my cat. They specialize in transporting cats and dogs to australia and NZ.
