Hi
After an unexplained delay regarding 'missing paperwork', The Moving Company' have sent us the neccessary paperwork they say is now required before they can deliver our belongings from port.
The paperwork states that " The following inspection and associated costs relate to your shipment when inspected:
Quarantine Clearance Inspection, Handling including supervision by MAF Accredited staff, BACC & documentation - $169.00 inc GST.
Payable by cheque to the Moving Company.
Attached to this is a piece of paper " For custom use only"
that looks like it should have been completed by them ( there is a box for a completed by......... and a box for an official stamp - both BLANK) ie: no one else has completed any other paperwork relating to our container, by the look of things!
Are we being ripped off? Or should we ask to see the customs paperwork?
Is $169 supposed to be paid to The Moving Company?
John Mason's never mentioned this....
Sorry to be so long winded, any advice gratefully received.

Your stuff goes through customs before being inspeted by MAF. You personally do normally do need to complete some sort of customs declaration, if this is what you are referring to.
You can also pay MAF direct for anything they inspect...IF they want to look at anything. Most companies we got quotes from did tell us (I asked...they don't volunteer this info) that they would also make a small charge if they require staff to unpack/repack anything...but they should be able to tell you how long it tok (and the hourly rate this costs IN ADVANCE). If they don't wish to look at anything = no fee. If they do, contact MAF direct and find out what they looked at i.e. how many items and how long it took. The more boxes that are opened, the higher the fee will be.
The moving company are notoriously fickle IMHO, so you need to ask questions about every step on the process.

Lesley,
Very interested in your post as our stuff is due to hit NZ on Friday. I asked John Masons lots and lots of questions and the impression I got is that the removal company over here tend to guestimate what the MAF inspections will be...and charge you, they could be over ( great for them!!) they could be under ( great for you!!!)....no prizes for guessing what they are likely to be!
This is what I was told...could be completely inaccurate! I will be interested to see how and what others' reply to this, as I am going to be in the same position in a couple of weeks!
Good Luck

Hi Lesley...any news?
Our stuff was supposed to arrive in NZ today the 11th...so last night I rang UK John Masons to find out if everything going to schedule...and they said 'according to us your stuff has been in NZ since the 22nd December'. We gave them email ( as that was the only contact for us we had at the time) and didn't contact us. He gave me number to Moving Company...I have telephoned this AM and waiting for them to get back to me...i'll let you know what we get charged.
Oh yes...I rang the MAF place...Wellington, and kept getting transferred to department after department, when I did speak to someone he wouldn't share any details and told me to ring the Moving Company.
I am sure I have heard on this forum that you can ring up and find out what the actual inspection has cost??
Let me know how you get on and i'll keep you posted

Hi Jade
No news as yet, gonna get hubby to ring MC later today and ask them to explain the charges ( I'm not as assertive as him on the phone)
We just feel a little uneasy about them, considering we had to chase them like you also only to be told by Masons that our stuff docked over a month ago!! When we quizzed the MC they told us that Masons had given them the wrong address (an out and out lie IMHO as Masons have been very professional in their correspondence with us to date)
I'l let you know what transpires of course....xx

Hi Lesley,
Spoke to the contact JM's gave me this afternoon...our stuff is here. I asked how much the MAF fee's were and she said it hadn't been done yet and that there is a form for us to fill in...she had sent me numerous emails. I explained that the emails had not reached me...and assured her they are checked everyday...she re-read Grahams COMPLICATED email address out...all seemed correct...then to prove she had sent them, she was explaining that she was 'going into her sent box' on email...long story short...she had put an 'i' instead of 'l' into address. We now have forms...
So tomorrow we have to find somewhere to print off...fill it in and fax/send it back and then the process would start..
I asked if they delivered at weekends ( worth a try!!!) as we both work full time...'no'...they will let us know when they are in this area and give us 2/3 days notice!!! Not ideal when we work full time...but tough, we'll have to work around it.
So all in all, a positive result, in that we are now moving forward!!
Hope you got the answers you wanted...

Beware of the 2 to 3 days notice thing. The Moving Company rang me in the morning to say they were delivering in the afternoon and they were already loading the van. Luckily OH made it home from work in time and we didn't eant to argue with them about it in case there was a long delay before they could find another delivery slot.

We were sent a huge list of charges from NZ Vanlines who had our stuff, just before our stuff had even arrived. I nearly fell through the floor at some of them.
In the end, they arrived, paperwork was sent back (with me seeing $$$$ signs in my head) and they arrives within few days and we have never had a bill from them!
We only had 11 boxes though, so maybe slightly different to you if you have shipped entire household things over.
I was told by NZ Vanlines that it is only an estimate of what they CAN charge.
One thing i do remember is that we had to give a full itinerary of the stuff we had in each box, maybe because i had packed myself, which thankfully i had all on the computer.........again, maybe a lot different as you have had your done professionally.
Hope this helps in some way.
Sharon
PS - Its like Christmas when your stuff does arrive, as i said, we only had 11 boxes, but it was fab to see OUR stuff again..........
Good Luck!!

Got paperwork through...did you have to send original passport off or a certified copy?
They have said our is going to be $225...where do they get these figures from aghhhhhhhhhh...it hasn't been inspected, we may have a lot of boxes, but we got rid of absolutely everything that may bump the cost up.
Do they do it off the amount of boxes they have?? we have 95 boxes coming over.
Im really cross right now...I can't understand how they can just pluck figures out of the sky.

Don't pay them, pay MAF directly. They do seem to pluck figures out of thin air, MAF should inspect on site if it's a whole container, the lock should still be intact as well, removal men take it off in front of you, if not then you need to find out why it had been taken off. Then MAF will give you a bill. Luckily for us MAF weren't interested in any of our stuff so we didn't have to pay anything extra :D
If it's a part container then things are done differently, MAF will inspect at port and stuff off loaded there, a lot riskier in our eyes as things do tend to go missing a lot more :(
As said already watch out for their delivery times, we were phoned the day before and they turned up early on the day of off loading, luckily we were both there.

You should only be charged for the number of boxes that are opened and inspected, regardless of the total volume of stuff you have. And remember, MAF may not want to look at anything....they decide based on you declaration and a copy of your packing list. Put your foot down, and say you will pay it only after inspection so you have a definite figure. It should not hold up delivery of your stuff if you arrange to do it as a direct back transfer on-line as no waiting for cheques to clear etc.

Customs may well inspect before MAF, so the lock will be opened before MAF get to your stuff. Mostly customs don't seem to look, but occasionally they do. For example, they did look at all our boxes of DVD's (random check) which they do to make sure you are not bringing in illegal/dodgy material into country. They sometimes check your alcohol as well if you are bringing any.

Customs told me that they routinely inspect vacuum cleaners - even if they have been steam cleaned. They make no charge, but the Moving Company charged us $168 handling fee. They also charged us $184.50 for MAF fees. MAF told us that they only charge $25 per item plus a travel fee, it came to $120 - the rest was Moving Company fees.

I called The Moving Company to ask them when our stuff would be delivered, and they told me that the container was still in Singapore. I said that no, it wasn't, it was sat on Wellington dock being inspected by Customs. They said they'd call me back, did so, and then apologised for being wrong, and asked me how I knew what was really happening? Well, the power of the intahweb...
If you know your container number, you can track it here (http://www.track-trace.com/container.php).
If you know your ship, you can track that here (http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/index.html).
If your ship’s coming into Wellington, you can find out the arrival time to the minute here (http://www.centreportoperations.co.nz/webenq.php?query=ShippingMovements).
…and once your container’s in Welly, you can find out exactly what’s happening to it here (http://www.centreportoperations.co.nz/webenq.php).
Not exactly rocket science, this being the 21st century. :roll

Lesley...I feel for you...
Our update:I have been emailing and getting one word answers back. I emailed a couple of days ago and no response so I rang today. Apparently our stuff has been MAF inspected today, she implied the MAF inspector came to their site. I asked how much MAF had charged ( as I said I would pay them direct) and she said $225.00...and then said we can't release your stuff until we have paid and have sent an invoice through. The invoice is from the Moving Company and is exactly the wording you have written on your original post but with $225.00 attached! So...actually I have still not been billed by MAF!! Grrrr...hubby is just giving in, as we want our stuff and has just said pay it, but I am rather cross. I said to her, 'gosh, they must have inspected lots of boxes to get to that price?? I got rid of all the stuff they would want to inspect back in the UK to save us money this end'....her response...'They checked lots, your xmas tree's, your bikes and your hoover'............Is this loads...doesn't seem like a lot to me??
What do you all think...should I just loose the battle and get our stuff quicker...or battle on and try and pay MAF direct?
Oh yes, last time I rang MAF, they wouldnt tell me what the charge was they said 'speak to your removal company'...so feel like I am getting nowhere!

Oh crafty boogers.
You could try insisting again that you are going to pay MAF direct and stating that this is what you had planned to do all along. Try ringing MAF and ask for an invoice to be emailed directly to you. No harm in trying. :D
$225 sounds a lot for that though. Did they have to travel far to inspect it?
I think some MAF centres are letting the removal companies deal with it all much more now. Less work for them and they still get paid and they don't have to deal with the public.
It is hard when you want your stuff though and that's exactly what they're banking on!!!! Good luck!
Jayne
You should be able to check your container anywhere, as long as you ask the removal co for the container number.

Hi,
Well, after a lot of pondering I decided to ring JM in Uk and ended up having a bit of a rant, I started off quite calm and it just escalated! They reassured me that the MC are a reputable company and that it is very unusual for someone to ring up with my queries as they get soooo many compliments about the service this end!!!!!! ANyway, they listened and then said that maybe it is a fault on their part, and that when they explain ( in the UK) 'the only charge you will have will be maf fees'...they also mean this includes repacking costes and all the other things MC had invoiced for.
So, basically we have to pay the bill..as it is right (according to JM) and he has emailed MC to ask them to dispatch ASAP when payment is made!
The guy from JM said there are mixed feelings and views about whether you can pay MAF direct.....so
Think I am just going to give up and pay!!!!!

Hi Jade, and anyone else having difficulties here:
I also decide to have a rant via e mail - and received the following response this morning!
Hello
Many thanks for the message via our website.
We are very surprised at the lack of movement from our agents in NZ. We have used them for a number of years now and very rarely get any negative feedback about them in fact it is normally quite the contrary.
We have asked them to contact you immediately and remedy the situation as early as possible and some feedback on what has caused this very unusual delay.
If you have any further problems please do not hesitate to contact us.
Many regards
All work is carried out in accordance with our Terms and Conditions of Contract - copies available upon request.

Funny how they never seem to receive 'negative feedback' regarding The MC?
It spoils what was for our experience a very good service in the UK prompt and efficient - or are we just particularly 'hyper' once our feet touch NZ soil?

Call the MAF, ask them how much the inspection was and then call the Moving Company again. Tell them you called the MAF and you know how much the inspection really was (because there will be a difference....) and state that you will pay the amount that MAF has really charged.
This is what I did (see my old threads on this) and after much debating to and fro managed to get a lot of money of the Moving Company bill as they overcharged us by hundreds of dollars!
I also emailed our moving company in The Netherlands, and they also never heard any negative stuff about the Moving Company. Something I don't really believe....

Well, you can definitely tell if your container has arrived in Auckland using one of the links I provided. As to where it is in Auckland Port, I'm not sure. It's not unlikely that they have a similar system to Welly, although, you know, it's grim up north. :p

figures! I got exactly the same thing when I complained to John Mason - "we never get any negative feedback about the moving company".. err..yeah right - springs to mind!
to everyone else trying to decide what to do - obviously just paying the MC bill will minimise stress, but one alternative is to pitch up at the local MAF office (I can help on the location of the CHC one), ask to pay your bill, pay your bill and then go to the moving co and say - look receipt for paid bill! I did have to compromise and pay MC a small amount to cover their time for locating the boxes MAF wanted, but that combined with the MAF bill was still only about 50% of what MC originally asked for. At the time, it was the principle, especially as they'd lied to us about several things (including telling us our container was delayed with MAF, when we knew from the Lyttleton port website the ship wasn't even due to dock for 48 hours - we even watched it arrive live on the webcam!) but after a year here, $200 would be a good weeks food shopping or a months power bill, so I'm glad I didn't just pay up. It does make a difference when you start earning dollars....
best of luck with whatever you all decide!

I pitched up at the MAF office in Welly Port and it scared the doobies out of them. They are really not eqiupped for dealing with immigrants with complaints about MAF or moving companies, in our case NZ Van Lines.
I settled in their front foyer with a thick book, my sarnies and a drink from their coffee machine and said I was fine to wait. I had all day and would wait until the problems were sorted, with free coffee YAY!. :D
Inside I was shaking :uhoh but it did get sorted within the hour. I'd been given duff info from NZVL and MAF were only too keen to keep calling them until it was sorted. They kept calling me to the phone, which was on their front service desk and was very offputting for them, especially when other members of the public came in. :nice1
I put the phone down on NZVL at one point and just sat back down on their comfy sofa! They stared at me "mad woman alert" :D but NZVL were soon called again, from their back office and told to "sort it!"
You do have to have guts or be completed stonking furious, but it can work, as long as you keep calm.
Good luck

Our stuff was delivered by The Moving Company on Monday. Yay! No issues, good blokes, very efficient. The MAF lady arrived on Tuesday morning to open our restricted boxes, took away a little sweeping brush that was made from millet (had seeds) and sprayed our hiking boot soles with her magic pink potion. That was it. No bill. Then again, we didn't move in from the UK, so the arrangements are probably very different to what you guys seem to be suffering with.

30th January 2008, 08:34 PM
We didn't arrange it to be honest, it just happened. We're probably in a different situation to UK immigrants though - all of our stuff was boxed, palletised and then loaded into the container. Every box's content was itemised individually, which allowed MAF to identify about 15 boxes that they were interested in (hiking boots, tools, kids trike, etc.). The movers put the suspect boxes to one side and we had to sign a form to agree that we'd not open them until they were inspected. For most UK->NZ migrants I guess your container is loaded "loose", as it were, so maybe there's no way to escape a full inspection. Even our sofa was poly-wrapped! We were dealing with Margaret at TMC Wellington, but to be honest I think there's *only* Margaret at TMC Wellington. It doesn't look like they have a big office!

Lesley, got your stuff yet?
We went the "We pay MAF' route and had to pay them 225 dollars. (30m2 container) That was February last year by the way. The same list mentioned by the MC as above: "They want to see your Xmas tree, hoover, shoes, bikes" bladibla.
We told them we wanted the container delivered at our door, we had the key and if it was opened without us being there there would be trouble.
They had the list and we think it is customs that tick the items that need to be inspected by MAF, but not 100% sure about that?
In the end the guys of the MC were hardworking blokes, who quickly unloaded the container and came along a week later to collect any packing material, we kept the boxes, because we're in a rental and will need them when we move again and we paid big bucks for them!

Well, to say are very surprised would be an understatement. We have never had these issues occur before with The Moving Company. I have passed on your email to The Moving Company and asked them to expedite matters with the utmost urgency. I have also asked for someone at a senior management level to contact you to discuss your issues and try and remedy the situation.
Please keep me informed.
Many regards
David
We wouldn't mind too much, but our stuff has been sitting in Auckland since the 5th of Dec, and we have been relying on kind friends to loan us a computer and a vacuum cleaner since we arrived it's becoming embarrassing!

Well today I caved in & paid an extra $25 to The Moving Company.
My fight is now over with The Moving Company & I will no longer have to deal with them again & although I'm still kicking myself for caving in I'm sure I can now move on.
In brief if it helps anyone new, they were going to charge us $378 for MAF fees, after e mailing MAF from their website I got a reply saying it was only costing $240 so maybe I upset TMC a bit :raebanana
After they accidently gave me my chairs that should have been cleaned 1st they tryed to charge me extra as because of their error it was going to cost more to clean, I refused this but then there has been a fight ever since over $25. TMC say it was MAF fees & MAF have said we cleaned 5 pairs of golf shoes, a complete lie but fed up with the battle, Maragret at TMC is like a dog with a bone & for the sake of $25 have given themselves an even worse reputation along with John Masons for using them
Well rant over sorry but I am now FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE :raebanana
Just had a thought, maybe we should bump this post or post every week/month how bad they are then maybe JM may do something about them, maybe I should just let it go?:exit

No ... I'll be happy to be one to keep bumping this up. I fully understand about the $25 so don't beat yourself up about it. Add all those little sums together though & that's a lot of extra bunce in their pockets. Enjoy your freedom.

Oooh my goodness - keep reading about the Moving Company and am dreading the thought of having to ague with them - but sure will if I have to. Maybe you should send the thread to JM and make them aware that we have all got a coomplaint with MC - doubt it will help they have got their money from you. But I am sending it o my removal company in SA to make them aware of who they dealing with.
Hope you feeling better anyway
