Arghhhh its a nightmare :wah
The place i live now we all (shared house) need to move out of by the 1st of Feb (only told on new years day!!!!) and i am having a nightmare trying to find a new home, so if anyone has any tips?
I am going to be sharing again with one of my current flatmates, so we are looking for either a 2 or 3 bedroom place in Lower Hutt, Wellington if anyone knows of anything? ($330 max pw).
But in the past week we have telephoned 10-12 places that were only listed that very day, only to be told that "sorry thats now rented" and then we have looked at 2-3 that we liked, told the agents that we would like to proceed and given forms to fill out, only to be called later and then told "sorry someones now took that property" :wah
What do you have to do to get a rental in this country! At this rate we be living in a hostel in 3 weeks time.

Can only suggest the normal websites such as trademe.
You could check Rentals Hutt Valey (http://www.realestate.co.nz/rental/all/hutt-valley) which appears to have some rentals in your price range.
Getting the dominion post early in the day was always recommended to us when we were searching for a rental.
Also, filling in the forms straight away and handing them back will give you an improved chance.

Could also have a look here www.nzflatmates.co.nz/ , if you haven't already :)
Not sure what else to recommend other than the usual places, have you got your name on agents books ? So they'll call you first rather than you chasing them.

It's THE worst time of year to look for a rental! Students starting back at uni are searching at the moment, which means the market is much more competitive than it usually is.
This is what I learnt when renting:
It pays to be cunning and you can sometimes bribe your way into a great house that lots of people are interested in - offer to increase the rent by a few bucks a week, for example, that worked for me a couple of times!
Call all the rental agents in your area and let them know the sort of properties you're interested in - and then phone them every day to find out if they have anything new on their books. Be persistent too, if they show you something that isn't what you want then tell them what you do - don't let them waste your time (and theirs) by taking you to see places that are ultimately unsuitable.
Make a decision there and then. If a place is what you want don't waste time mulling it over - someone else may get in there and snap it up. Have all your references, agency fees and bond money ready.
I hope you find somewhere soon, it's a pain having such a short notice period and at this time of year!

Just added link to another thread. Here are a load of websites we used when looking for rental. I think the answer is make a quick decision this time of year. Anywhere that is half decent will go really quickly so if you view a property and you like it....take a few minutes extra to give it a really thorough grilling such as turning all taps on to check water pressure and smelling wardrobes to see if they smell musty and damp etc (i.e. not covering up problems by leaving windows open before viewings to hide damp problems).

Yaaa we signed a tenancy today for a little 2bed house in Lower Hutt, And we move in in just under 3 weeks time.
It feels a lot like a British house (well bungalow) as its brick with polished floors and an open fireplace, separate rooms so not NZ style open plan. No French doors etc, a nice cosy lounge with windows onto the front rose garden! And the back garden is very British, a long narrow rectangular lawn with flower beds and shrubs around the edges, a shed and coldframe at the end, and high fences around garden.
I shall feel very at home i think :)
