Is there a difference between the wages in Auckland and Wellington?
I ask because my OH and I were always looking at Auckland but I'm now thinking about Wellington for a new life.

Try checking out a salary survey such as Robert Walters Salary survey (http://www.robertwalters.co.nz/resources/salarysurvey/NewZealand.pdf) which lists a whole range of jobs in Auckland and Wellington.
Otherwise, I'm sure that there will be some regional variations depending on the job type.

That was a really good overview! :)
Other info that I have seen seems to make wages to show as higher than they really are.
Still to remember that if no profession/education and a bit outside of the major cities then a normal pay is 12-18 dollars per hour. 25 - 38k per year.

I think it depends on the type of work you do.
Wellington usually pays more for accountants, business analyst/advisors etc, possibly due to the large Public Sector. The focus of IT work is different between the cities, so that would have some effect on packages.

I've noticed that in my field in IT salaries are significantly higher in Welly (30k). Appears that govt are paying pretty high at the moment

Thanks for the info. Will have a chat with the old ball and chain and see if she fancies Wellington.

You need to compare the cost of housing when deciding too as you may get higher salaries in one area but housing is costly so it out ways the benefit.
Have you been to either City? They are quite different. Not going to start on the north south divide :laugh it just different reasons for different people. I'm in Welly but when its windy I wished we had gone Auckland. Our decision was down to where we got a first job out of the 2 of us. We had been here 18 months before and I actually fancied other places but no jobs there. Either one will be good compared to my recent visit to the UK.

So true as I always say, "It's not how much you make, it's how much you can save"
Be fortunate that you're moving between big city to another big city. I know a family that just moved from Timaru to Wellington and have been totally shocked at how expensive rent is (@ $400/week). Of course the big salary was what lured them to WGN and they did know living expenses would be a lot more... but probably far more than than they expected.

Check out the AbsoluteIT web site.
They have a salary survey posted there and for the IT industry you will see that generally Auckland pays more then Wellington.
But as mentioned earlier in the thread you do have to look at house prices as generally housing in AKL is far more expensive than Wellington

Just don't tell her that it is also one of the colder places :laugh
BTW, I hate the wind, but don't find Wellington to be too bad most of the time.
