I'd had dinner at a lovely little cafe (Vella on the Coast, Waikanae), and was sat in the parking area (in my newly hired car) contemplating whether I had time to explore a bit more before it went dark, or whether I should go straight back to the hotel. The roads were quiet, and I was just about to back up a bit and turn around when I heard a screeching engine. Behind me, over the crest of the hill came some sort of muscle car (hubby will want to know what it was... I was too scared to look properly!!!), engine screaming, tyres shrieking.... it did a "drift" in the middle of the road to turn around, slithering past the back of me in my car, and missing me by about.... oh 3 feet :-0
Then with tyres smoking and rubber tracks well and truly laid in the road it hurtled back the way it had come, and dived off the road a few yards up - you could see the noses of a few similar beasts already parked up. I must admit, it felt close to brown trousers time!!!

I took a deep breath, and pulled out, then scuttled back to my motel as fast as I dared! If I had backed out a few moments earlier it would probably have side swiped me. It is entirely possible that the driver was completely in control of his vehicle, and would have missed me by miles, but it felt a damn sight too close for comfort!!!

Was I just unlucky? Or perhaps lucky? Do the hoons go everywhere, or is Waikanae a particularly popular spot for them?

Victoria, I see from your sig that you are in this area too.

Sat in my hotel I can hear engines roaring and tyres screeching from time to time, so I guess they are having fun tonight... are they at it all the time around here? Or just the weekends?

If this is an active "Hoon" thoroughfare, I will rethink my ideas of finding a house around here!

Yeah Jane I'm up in Reikorangi & much quieter as the road is a no exit. I rented at Raumati Beach for 6 months. Normally the p****s are out from Fri. night onwards. Seeing as it's summer hols I suppose 'daylight scary time" is in place. To be truthful, I don't think it's as bad as some areas.
I like the Waikanae area very much as it balances between country, generally quiet suburbia with the conveniences of town living. Sorry you had a dodgy experience & please don't let it put you off. Honestly, we've been here 7 months & haven't had an active incident. There are lots of nice areas about here. Maybe a few other forumites in Waikanae might offer an opinion too.
