On the flight from Auckland to Welly the other day, I was fascinated to see what looked like a volcano somewhere on the north island, maybe 5 mins after leaving Auckland. It was totally black, and pointy-topped, and looked like a Disney picture of a volcano. It had a completely black circle all around the base, and was set in lush green lands near the coast. Any suggestions which it could have been?

From a map, I thought it might have been Mt Taranaki, but photos of that show it snow covered all year round. Any suggestions folks?

Sounds like Mt Taranaki - flight normally goes that way but would have thought it would have been about 20 mins after takeoff

Thanks!
It could have been 20 minutes, I was pretty jet lagged at that point. However it was very black and pointy, not a hint of snow. Is Taranaki snow covered all year round?

Given it's location, South west of North Island I'd be surprised that planes from Auckland to Wellington would fly near it , but there again know nothing of their routes:laugh .
We flew over it in Dec 2006 from Nelson to Auckland

Sounds like it may have been Mount Ngauruhoe, which lies next to Ruapehu, and as your on a flight from Auckland to Welly then the flight path is middle of the road, and Ngauruhoe lies central, down the desert road.

Pic of it, but with snow

OK, here is a rather blurry picture, taken from the plane:

You can't tell from this (the clouds are in the way) that there was a round black circle at the bottom.

It was taken in July from SH4 just as you enter National Park. Here's one from distance, as that one was zoomed in on.
