.. and looking to make new friends! Actually we arrived late last year but family circumstances have meant that we have returned to the UK twice in less than three months, so while we have been here a while there has not been much chance to settle in. I am a 44 year old professional who has lived in several other countries worldwide while my son is a 12 year old who has lived predominantly in London for the past 9 years. Because we both have Australian citizenship (but English accents) we can stay here as long as we want, but I have hedged my bets and taken leave from the civil service in London.
We are currently living in Roseneath but are likely to move in the next month to better accommodation closer to the city. Jack will start at Wellington College in February while I am busy working on The Terrace... (who said that jobs here were less stressful than London????)
Thoughts on activities in Wellington for children during the summer holidays would be much appreciated - and any other friendly advice welcomed on how to settle in.
Thanks
Rebecca and Jack
PS First time I've ever done anything like this!

Hi Rebecca.
Why don't you think about organising a welly meet-up? There must be others who would also be interested...
I have just moved here (2 days ago) and will also be working on The Terrace (I start work at the end of the month). Like you, I am 44, and a business professional, with a hubby and young son (mine is only 8). Perhaps we should meet for a coffee sometime?
regards,
Jane

Thanks Jane. Checking other messages I can see that another member is planning a welly meet-up on February 3rd so I might go along to that rather than setting something up myself.
Happy to meet for a coffee when you have settled into your new job.

If Jack is into skateboarding then you might want to check out the purpose built facility at Waitangi Park (opposite the New World) just down from Te Papa. It's well used and there are generally a few Mums and Dads spectating.
There is also an indoor skateboarding/ rollerskating facility at the Kilbirnie Recreation Centre. The swimming pool here is also worth a visit. Lots of (lifeguard supervised) activities for the kids - inflatables, rope swings over the pool. The best outdoor pool we have found is over at Eastbourne, very warm water temp and pleasant surroundings.
You could always give the cricket a go tomorrow - NZ (Black Caps v Bangladesh) down at the Basin Reserve. All the kids were getting a bag of freebies today as well as free admission. Only $10 for adults. Amazing value!

Hi Rebecca,
We are hoping to be in Wellington in May and also have a 12yr old. What school is Jack in at the moment?
Not sure where we'll end up yet, but I think it would help Matt if he could contact someone his own age. He is shy and hates the thought of changing schools. If you post a couple more times could I then PM his e-mail address, would Jack be willing to chat to him?

Thanks for posting that, were a couple in the Uk, 2 kids 10,,11yrs, we have not even filled an EOI in yet, were waiting on feedback from The migrationbureau.com, based on what they tell us will decide what route to go.
Big favor to ask those already enjoying their new life in NZ, Is anyone aware of the IT job markets like in either Wellington or Auckland? any feedback would be greatly appreciated. (I'm a computer systems engineer)
My wife is an HR Manager so ditto for her too.
So what’s the weather like just now, you will be glad to hear its wet and cold here.
Thanks again for posting

Thanks for all the responses and ideas. Unfortunately 12 is an awkward age so Jack is not keen for me to set up things but not keen to venture out on his own either. We've got the long weekend coming up, and an offer to go to the Wairarapa for a barbeque (with a chance to pitch a tent so we can stay late) so that will be good. Other than that I may send him to stay with friends in Wanganui (although they have girls and Jack has yet to think girls are worth bothering with!)
