hi,
We intend to stay in a Motel until our stuff arrives from the UK. I was wondering if I could buy a car and legally drive it if we are living in a Motel - or would I have to wait until we rent a place of our own ?
Otherwise the car rental will be a bit pricey !
cheers

I doubt this would be a problem at all, as long as you are paying cash (and not borrowing from a bank to purchase the car). We will most likely do the same. I am sure there must be many who have done exactly this and they will be here on this thread shortly to confirm...

Yep you can, we were living in a motel when we purchased our car.
You do have to register the car in your name and you do need an address for this so we just used the motel address without any problems. You will of course need to do a 'change of address' once you move into your own accomodation.

We did similar and had no problems at all. We got an interest free finance deal so we didn't have to pay all at once. As we were in temporary address they did ask to see a copy of our UK Experian Credit Reference. Once we found a mmore permanent rental the insurance went down loads too!

Hi Dom,
We bought our car while we were in motel too. I believe after buying the car you have 10 days to register the car in your name (post office does it). And later on you can change the address. Our motel owner didn't mind us using their postal address for the correspondence. Maybe you should check with them

What about the insurance? Did folks use the motel address for that too?

Well, you don't actually need car insurance in NZ so this is technically a none issue.
But no doubt you will want it (until at least you can get your head around the give way rule), then yes you can use the hotel address for your car insurance also.
