My wife and I are going to NZ on a working visa later this year, from the UK. She asked me today what would happen with regards to the validity of the visa and the subsequent health care if she were to fall pregnant during our stay. Would we need to convert our visa into something more permenant if it was too late in the pregnancy to fly home safely and the end of the visa was looming?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, dunno if I am right or not but I think I have heard that giving birth is for free in NZ, no matter if you are a citizen or not.
This is why already pregnant females have had hard to get in here since it has been popular to get the for free birth here.
Check this up!
and don't tell at the border that you are pregnant or trying to become! :)

You get free maternity care of you are here with PR , and I did think it was free with a 2 yr work visa too, but not so sure now after checking here..

Aha, found another site http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/eligibility-background you are covered if you are on a 2 yr work visa.

I am not sure what would happen if your visa ran out and it was too late to fly, guess you need to ask your case officer that one!

Is a baby born a Kiwi if you are here on a work visa?

Cheers

Nope... you have to be entitled to be in NZ indefinitely for your child to be a kiwi (ie parents hold PR) just found the info...

http://www.citizenship.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Citizenship-Requirements-for-New-Zealand-Citizenship?OpenDocument

From 1 January 2006, children born in New Zealand (or in the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau) will acquire New Zealand citizenship at birth only if at least one of their parents:

is a New Zealand citizen; or
is entitled to be in New Zealand indefinitely in terms of the Immigration Act 1987(ie a residence permit holder or Australian citizen); or
is entitled to reside indefinitely in the Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue.

A child born in New Zealand will be a New Zealand citizen by birth if they would otherwise be stateless.

I came here pregnant (2 more weeks to go!) on a work visa, but hubby is a Kiwi so maternity care is free for me. We had to show his passport and our marriage certificate though to prove it.
