I've got myself all confused (I hate filling in forms!) about the difference between a work permit and a work visa. I'm filling in form NZIS 1015, and at the top you have to chose what you are applying for:

I am applying for a work visa. Mark this box if you want to travel to New Zealand to work or if you already have a work permit and want to leave New Zealand and return to continue working.
I am applying for a work permit. Mark this box if you are in New Zealand and want to work here temporarily or if you already have a work permit and want a further work permit.
I am applying for a work permit and a work visa. Mark this box if you are in New Zealand and want to work here temporarily and you also want to be able to leave New Zealand while your work permit is current and return to continue working.

So that suggests that because I am currently in teh UK, I only need to get a work visa? But my new employers (in NZ) have told me that I need to apply for both so that I can enter NZ and work there.

Can anyone help clear this up for me please?
Thanks!

If you are outside NZ then you need to have a valid Work permit and Work visa.

The Visa gives you permission to travel to NZ, the permit gives you permission to stay in NZ.

See Visa and Permit (http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/VisaandPermit.htm) for more details.

Excellent, thanks Ian. I thought that I had read everything on the NZIS site, but I guess that page passed me by...

So it seems like I do need both, but I get the visa now, and the permit at the airport when I enter NZ?

Thanks,
Jenny

Yes, I think the visa give you permission to travel there to work and then it is changed to a permit allowing you to work when you arrive.

No extra forms to fill out or anything, the chap at passport control checks out the visa details on the blue sticker, stamps a permit onto another page and tranfers the date details.

That's correct, yes - but you do need to apply for both now, on the same form.
