We are due to fly out to NZ in the next few weeks and on arrival will be looking for a rental property - we will be staying in a holiday home for the first 3 week.

We know we may require references in order to secure a rental ;we have never rented before so we were wondering what kind and how many references we will need.

I know we can get a reference from our bank to say we have never defaulted on our mortgage payments and a charachter reference from colleague.

Do we need anything else?

We had to take out a 6 week rental till our house was ready and i used my work reference and paid cash up front and that was fine, mine you we had been recommened to that agent from the agent who'd we'd bought the house off.

If you rent direct from the owner, usuallly no reference is needed.
