Hi,
I was wondering if anyone from NY has had or will their belongings shipped to New Zealand? And if so, how much was it and who did you use? I plan to move there this year and want to start getting an idea of how much it will be for what I want to ship. I was told to use a freight forwarder instead of a moving company. I only have a small amount of goods to ship. The largest item I will have is an eliptical machine.
Thanks!

Shipping is expensive. Try to sell the big items. Use normal sea mail to send smaller items packed in 20KG boxes. Freight forwarding companies charge you a bomb and you may have problems with the customs and may incur hidden charges.

Can't help you on costs, but just a reminder that electrical items in NZ work on a different voltage to US, so consider carefully what you are intending to bring.
For more details try using the search option as it has been discussed many times before.

From Cleveland to Wellington for self pack, self drop off, and self pick up, we were quoted $375/cubic meter by http://www.upakweship.com/.
We've heard some good reviews on here for them so that is who we plan to use.
You can also do whole containers, and have them pick up and drop off.
That's as much as I can tell you.

1) I think there was a discussion of shipping from NY here a few months ago. You might try the search engine if you haven't. If you have only a partial load you can arrange with a company that consolidates or try to hook-up with someone who wants to fill their container.
Shipping is expensive. Try to sell the big items. Use normal sea mail to send smaller items packed in 20KG boxes. Freight forwarding companies charge you a bomb and you may have problems with the customs and may incur hidden charges.
2) As for shipping vs. selling and replacing, again, a quick search of this site will reveal that general consensus of those of us who have made the trip is that you should ship everything you possibly can rather than replace them... certain electrical items excepted...and there's a really good thread on what electric stuff works and what to ditch. It costs a small fortune to replace a whole household here and you generally only get a few cents on the dollar if you try to sell used goods in the states.
3) And,,,, if 'normal sea mail' refers to a USPS service, it was discontinued some time ago. If there's a different, cost effective surface shipping service for small shipments, we'd all like to have a link to it!
4) The only Customs discussion I had involve a flat-top guitar that I shipped by USPS. They requested duties. I called them and explained that I am a new resident and they had the pkg to me in two days with no hassle what-so-ever. I also had an issue with four wooden hiking staffs that I shipped USPS (I expected them to get flagged, but they have sentimental value.) MAF wanted to know if they should fumigate with MeBr, return to sender, or burn them. They treated them for NZ$20 and had them to me in 4 days...I think it was four days. No big deal.
5) Regarding UpPakWeShip.... They were excellent for us. They really baled us out when we were left high and dry by another outfit.... which we should have know was bad if we'd done the Google search for reliability of international freight shipping companies.
Cheers, good luck, and welcome to the forum.
There are a good bunch of folks here with a lot of first hand experience. They really helped us past some of the rough spots.
