I was putting some duct tape on my son's wart (doctor's advise!), when I just thought, hey let's try it on one of my (many) mozzie bites. And voila, it worked!

Hi Nienke

We we're talking about this over dinner (as you do! :uhoh) and can't figure out why it works. OH's brain is better than mine and all he could figure out was that it may have some weird active ingredient, or possibly just exclude the air.

It's got me wondering now as last year my uncle bought some of this while in the UK but it was confiscated by customs at Rotterdam who said he couldn't bring it into Holland, but they didn't tell him why. We couldn't figure out why then either.

Sorry Sharon to hijack your thread. I hope your bites are much better today :yes

OK, if you're still eating your breakie, best not read this.......

Can anyone suggest anything for bites that won't stop 'oozing' ? Yesterday I put some 'Geromlene New Skin' on them, thinking it would make a protective seal over the bite. This worked quite well with 3 of them (enough to allow me to take the dressings off) but the one on my ankle is still oozing out all over the place.

Oh BTW, the 'New Skin' worked a treat at taking away the itch :nice1

:D glad to be at your diner table...

Funny that it was confiscated at the border, as the stuff can be bought in Holland as well. It's just plain duct tape! I've got orange and grey duct tape now, one's the fabric-type, the other plain tape (I look so nice with those things plastered all over my legs :uhoh ), but they both do the trick.

In case of the warts, my GP said it just sealed the wart from air/oxygen, simply suffocating the wart. Maybe that's what also happens to the mozzie bite? Might also be an ingredient in the glue of the tape.

Maybe Bepanthen would work?

hummmmmm don't think it would help with the oozing specifically. I really need something to dry them out. There's something at the back of my mind....I'm sure it'll come to me sooner or later.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Something like tea tree oil is good for drying skin out. Or if you want to draw out the liquid use magnesium sulphate paste (from pharmacy counter) and cover with plaster. It will draw out oozing yuckiness and skin will then dry out naturally.....same stuff doctors advise for things like boils or oozing ingrown toenails etc.

TCP is pretty good at drying out ooze - can you get that in NZ?

magnesium sulphate paste

That's what I was trying to remember :nice1 Thanks

I'll see what they're like tomorrow. At the moment it looks like I've had 4 big leeches attached to my leg that have left love bites :uhoh

Since visiting Greece about 15 years ago and getting bitten 50 times by mosquitoes i have become the target for any insect that bites. They wait for the plane to land and then stand there with their bibs and knives and forks at the ready. In all that time the only thing that stops them itching (and i have tried all creams and potions along with tablets) is an old wives remedy of my mums, which is a couple of teaspoons of Bicarbonate of Soda mixed with a little water into a paste and dabbed on each bite. Do this before you get into bed and i guarantee you an itch free night and should be itch free until the following night when you dab them again. It also stops the bubble burst most of the time.............as you can tell i have been there, done it, bought the T shirt and still wearing it along with sending postcards. The other thing is to take the strongest Vitamin B tablets you can 2 a day during the insect season and they change your hormones which stops the mosquitoes in their tracks as it the hormonal smell that attracts them in the first place thats why they very rarely bite men. Try it it does work!!!! and it cheap :cheers

Oh, I had completely forgotten about that !!

My mum used to mix bicarb with vinegar for minor burns. That worked a treat too.

Just read a news article today that said recent research showed that mozzies are attracted to people who had eaten bananas recently.

Well, i havent eaten a banana in weeks...................and theyre loving me!!

My legs are a lot better since my trip to ED. My feet are getting better but the sandfly bites have left lots of little scars! My finger is down today too, so things may be on the UP!!

Have invested in one of the Mozzie Clicks that Zardell recommended - $22.99 in KMart - hope they work!!

One of the shop assistants recommended these plastic bands (like the ones you can get for Breast Cancer amongst other things) and said you can wear them on your legs too, they last 48hrs......... can you imagine, i would have to have one on each arm and each leg and go through a few packs a week!!!
She thought it was the cheaper option as they were $8.99 for 2........

These mozzies are costing me a fortune!

Not getting on much with these vitamin b tablets, find myself burping orangy tangs!!!yucky!!

Well, its that time of the year again..........

Have one leg plastered in bites, about 10 just around my knee whch looks mighty deformed! Few on my waist, few on my back and some on my feet. Lovely!

Been taking my anti hystermines and using spray - they still love me!

So, whilst in work today, i showed one of the Drs, who has prescribed me with another antihystermine to take with the other one i take, for 10 days, then if no ease - have to go back and he says will have to have Phenergan which makes you drowsy........

The Pharmacy in work also gave me some Pinetarsal which i remember Lesley suggested -

I am like a walking picnic!
Was looking forward to wearing a nice dress to my christmas party on friday - no luck!

Anyone else having same probs ?

Dont know if this will help but was told by somebody in the Caribbean that if you get bitten by mosquito's to apply neat vodka to the bite brings out the liquid and drys it out and supposed to stop the itch. Also told by same person to apply pure coconut oil to your legs to stop sand flies biting. Also if you apply skin so soft oil from Avon after showering that is supposed to deter the mosquito's from biting.

I know how you feel the little used to love biting me.

oh you lot are putting me off my move - only joking! My eldest has excema and the one thing that stopped her scratching (for this and her chicken pox) was porridge oats. Fill a hanky or a stocking with oats and pop it in the bath, you get a milky liquid which soothes the skin. In fact you can just gently smooth the stocking over your skin. I have absolutely no idea if it would work on your bites but thought I'd offer some sympathy. Just off to stock up on anti-hystamines ;-)

My little neice tried the same - and I'm pretty sure that she was told to try some sort of liquid white parafine or something to put in the bath!!

Our little boy got bitten to pieces a couple of years ago on a visit around Kaikoura. He went climbing over the rocks and the sand flies went climbing all over him...nasty little bit him all up inside his shorts ( wont go into too much detail, but you get my drift) had about 12 altogether and spent the next few days buying the creams and anything else suggested to stop the itching. Bless him he was SO good - when the itching sarted again, he would just stop, screw his face up and put his hands up with the fingers dancing (like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit) going ooh, eeh, ooh and lots of sharp intakes of breath, until we could get something on him. Still had them when we left 4 weeks later - they ended up coming up into tiny little warts that lasted nearly 6 months!!! The itching had long gone thank goodness!

All this said, I think I'll give up trying to work out which shoes to bring with me in my luggage and which to put in the container....they can all go in the container, I'm just bringing cases of repellents and creams!;)

I'm allergic to insect bites of any sort and I made the mistake of picking up some garden rubbish barefoot at the weekend - so I have about half a dozen bites on my feet. I use Anthisan cream on my bites - which takes away the itching for a few hours, but I can't really do anything to stop them biting except to use a deet based roll-on.

In the house I have a couple of plug in repellers (the sort with the little bottle underneath) which work quite well. I have one by the bed and another in the study and they'll stay on until winter rolls in again. They seem to keep out most of the little blighters, but if it get's really hot, we just open the windows and drape a mosquito net over them.

I'm massively allergic to at least one particular antihistamine tablet - which may well have sensitised me to others. Since the last time I tried, I was laid up in bed for three days (and probably should have been hopsitalised) - I'm not too keen to experiment :uhoh

Will stick by my earlier post in this thread. Bicarbonate of soda mixed with a little cold water and put on each bite at any time but if you put it on at night before bed the itch has disappeared totally by morning and the little bubble doesnt burst more often than not. :nice1

Im currently suffering with sandfly bites. my horses are kept near a stream/river at the bottom of a valley so im an easy target!

Deet, Citronella and antihistimines are the best relief. I take Phenegran for the night time to stop me scratching in my sleep. You need to take it early eve though or you can still be groggy the next morning.

Also marmite (vit B) and garlic (if you can stomach it), are great add ins for your diet to ward off the little critters.

I had a horse in the UK that used to get "sweet itch", he had Marmite sandwich every day, and when he had an attack of the itches, he was treated with Benzol Benzonate (SP), that stopped him itching Immediately. Im sure you can buy that over counter. Looks like oily Calamine lotion.

Im going to give it a try as its the only thing that helped him when he had an attack! (rubbed himself till he bled!)
