Hi

Anyone suffer from continuous mossie bites ????

Since we have been over here, its cost me a trip to A and E when my leg swole up with one bite, which they thought may be a spider bite, then a course of antibiotics.

Then from then until now, just had the one now and again that came and went.

Now, this weekend, after coming from from out trip up to Morere and Mahia, i am plastered in them, all over my feet, up to my knees, and the odd few on my side and on an elbow. It just cost me $32 in antihystermines, cream and tablets, i am in agony with the itching ......................and i dread going to bed tonight as it gets so worse!!

Its beggining to get me down, in this heat i would love to wear a skirt, but my legs are so bad, i would die of shame!

This rate i am going to be back and forth the Dr or Pharmacy every few weeks..........

Ouch! I can empathise, I'm a walking mozzie/sandfly buffet. You sure they're not sandfly bites?

In any case, you need a good repellent - although I hear G&T also works :D

My wife does Sharon, she swells up with some horrible lumps after being bitten.

She finds "Soov" is a good salve, She also recommends a visit to a Health2000 shop to try their Herbal Allergy Formula with Manuka Honey - extra strength!!

Good luck to you and all other mossie sufferers.

Hi Moorf

Excuse my ignorance but what are sandfly bites, what do they look like ?

My legs seem to be a mix of lumpy bites and red spots - very yukky!!

I am racking my brains as to how............ OH and son have nothing !!!

Sharon I'm sure they're probably sand fly bites - we showed ours to a pharmacist and she gave us a soap (Pinetarsol Liquid) to use on them just before bed (cool shower) and recommended 'Lanacane' to remedy the itch.

Absolutely plastered in them and even after 2 years I'm not becoming immune. I went to the doc recently with a particularly bad one and he seems to think they are grass fleas rather than mossies or sand flies (this was from down Christchurch way)

My husband and oldest daughter suffer from mozzie bites- we use plug in mozzie repellants at night (raid from supermarket), which keeps them at bay then and use RID spray repellant on legs and arms come dusk. If you're out the back in the evening try the RAID mozzie lamps (also from supermarket)- work wonders.

My daughter gets them when out playing at dusk in the fields, so could be grass fleas or something but RID works- not aeroguard.

I think as far as the sand flys are concerned you either fall into delicious status or the i'lll try a quick bite of you & see anyway status ...

regrettably I'm delicious :laugh well to sand flies at least lol - the neighbours BBQ on saturday left me with about 20 bites . No insect repellant works on me & yes I've tried them all .

The best advice i can offer is dont be tempted to scratch them cause once you do they will itch like fury .

I will defiently look into that, its bad enough me having them, my little boy would go thro the roof. I have seen the RAID mozzie lamps too.

I wondered if i had a mix of two, as some look like bites and have gone lumpy, while the others are like red spots and in a rash. We were walking through some long grass down in Mahia yesterday and i wonder if some could be grass fleas.

I wonder if we should test the "blood group" theory.

Apparently - and forgive me as I forget where I first read this YEARS ago - mozzies and biting insects like rhesus negative blood. Don't ask me how they know! It's quite possibly an urban myth. :D

How sad am i........

Just found a webpage and i think that i have a mix of sandfly bites as well as mossie bites.

It seems that it is the female sandfly (or black fly as maoris call them) that cause us the pain......... after they have mated, they pierce the skin drawing blood, in order to produce their eggs -swines!!!!!!!!!

I did attach this pic from the webpage but you cant see it so well.........

Doesn't work in our case. Whole family are O +ive. The males of the family
have all been bitten a fair bit (and needed antibiotics), while the female family members have not had a single bite!

Maybe it is pheremones?

We found a few things seems to help as a repellant. We have some insect repellent that has loads of eucalyptus/mint/lavender/citronella oil in. Plus we use some of the Avon (Fresh & Light) body lotion that has citronella in it too.

For itching..the best stuff BY FAR that I have found is a cream called Eurax. I got some from the UK, and i'm not sure if you can get it here. Could always get someone to post it. It works on bites/excema etc really well...although it has a rather strange smell.

Just got back from the Drs, in agony with my legs and feet, each bite has become inflamed and swollen and look terrible.

Dr has said i have a very nasty infection and had given me Prensidone which i believe is a fairly strong painkiller and some antibiotics. If they havent gone or at least eased within 5 days i have to go back! Have to elevate my feet too to keep the pressure down and all around ankle bones on each leg is majorly swelling........

MIL and I are both covered in spots/bites/water blisters at the moment and not really sure where they came from. Some I'm sure are mozzie bites but the others... who knows  The three males in the house are almost spot free except for 1 or 2 mozzie bites so maybe it is something to do with pheramones (sp?) or estrogen ??? MIL went to see the Pharmacist and they suggested grass reaction, sandflies or allergic reaction to something, seems the professionals are as clued up as us! :laugh

Hope everyones bites get better soon!

I've heard mosquitos and sandflies are attracted to the chemicals secreted out of your hands. Maybe some people wash their hands better or more? (not calling anyone dirty) Or maybe some people's secrete more than others?

Though I would think that if it was secreted by the hands, that most bites would occur on the hands or on things that the hands have touched. So maybe people who get bit less don't touch themselves and wash their hands a lot?

jo b

Well, I swell up like a balloon when I get bitten. My arm was so bad I went to the chemist and as we were only on holiday on that occasion gave me strong antihistimene (prescrption only) knocked me out cold.

Oh yes I have delicious blood, which is A +ve btw, also I wash my hands LOTs (may have OCD:laugh).

Have to agree with citronella, works wonders, I make up the ponies fly spray with essential oils, obviously diluted. I am sure if it deters horse flies it may deter sand flies worth giving it a shot.

3 drops of tea tree oil
15ml drops of citronella oil
3 drops of eucalyptus oil
1 and half pints of strong cold tea (without the milk!!)
1 tablespoon washing up liquid
1 tablespoon of vinegar

Top up with water to make 2 litres people recommend it for themselves too.

Good luck

I recently went to our local health shop (Wild Oats, don't think it's a chain though) and they suggested Pro-life anti bite. It's B1, odourless garlic and quercetin. Cynic that I am, I didn't hold out much hope but for $14.00 gave it a try.

Ooooh, Sandflies and Mozzies, my favourite...NOT.

I am told, Sandflies and Mozzies are attracted by:- Your body heat, Sweat, the CO2 you breathe out, and the smell of blood (yours or a splattered sandflies!), all of which indicates to the female sandfly that a blood meal could be available. They are VERY efficient at this, after all, the sex life of a Sandfly depends upon it!.

I find that Aerogard works for me, although anything with a high Deet content is good. But best of all, if I'm working near water, that wearing a pair of overalls is best of all. Then I just spray my neck, face, and hands.

Why near water? Mozzies need still water and Sandflies need running water to breed in. This is the reason we are building our new house up the top of a very dry hill. I've yet to be bitten on our build site, but I can be destroyed in minutes on the valley floor.

we have found that if you soak a flannel in water as hot as you can bear and then hold it on the bite, the swelling goes down and it stops itching almost imediately! Does sting a bit while your doing it though!
Also for any one not here yet bring plenty of aniti hystamins with you cos they cost a fortune over here and you can't get chlorphaniramine (don't know how you spell it properly but its whats in piroton)

If you buy the branded versions over the counter then antihistamines can be very expensive approx. NZ$56 for a pack of 30 tablets.

One option that we use is to ask for the generic version instead e.g. for Claratine it is Loratadine and you can get the same amount of tablets for approx NZ$23 so well worth asking.

BTW, if the pharmacist doesn't sell them (first one we asked said they don't), then go elsewhere.

My sympathies to those who suffer from there nasties :(

I still have not found an effective method of dealing with the itching. I once went tramping in Fiordland, and everytime I stopped, the sandflies came in force. I learned from this that you don't get bitten provided you are constantly walking, or running!

Another time, I got 26 bites on one foot (including the ankle area). Eugh. The only lesson I learned was wear socks in the evenings, regardless of how unfashionable it is!
Also, the natural effect is to never, ever want to scratch the damn things again.

I got bitten almost everyday in the winter (I thought they were meant to disappear at that time of the year....sadly not in the rural areas of Nelson at least). I never got "immune". :(

It annoys me how they find the bits to bite that itch the worst. Fingers, toes.....anywhere close to the bone basically. My most hated part is just under the instep of your foot. Oh, God. If ever I get bitten there, I know its 10 days of torment coming right up.

I do something very similar when I get very itchy patches of ezcema....I use a hot hairdryer on the skin for as long as I can bear it (not too close to skin or you can burn yourself though)...works a treat and you don't need to reapply cream etc as not wet!!

You can get chlorpheniramine here - it's just dexchlorpheniramine which is 1 isomer of the racemic chlorpheniramine mixture (don't ask). The product is called Polaramine, it's a Pharmacist-only medicine, meaning you have to have a quick chat with the pharmacist before you can buy it.
Also, most pharmacies have an OTC pack of Razene (generic Zyrtec/Zirtek) at $24.95 for 30 tabs and Lora-tabs (generic Claratyne/Claritin) also at $24.95 for 30. Most don't sell the ones out of the dispensary because we're not strictly allowed to, as the packs say "dispensing pack only" meaning, as the name suggests, we can only use it for dispensing.

Anthisan is the best thing to put on bites, that and hydrocortisone cream, both twice daily

I find the piriton is far better than the loratadine or cetirizine. I'm itching all over from these midges, mosies and whatever else is eating me. That is one thing I miss about England though. since the supermarkets started selling all these drugs the prices have come right down. I was told, by a guy in the army, that its DEET that works best as a repellent. An incredibly unnatural product but apparently effective.

We've got Bushman - 80% DEET - Heavy Duty, seems to work well when we remember to put it on. Too strong for children though!

I bought back those little pricker things from boots for the in laws, one said it was great, the other thought it was useless!

Hope you all feel better soon, my OH attracts them, as do my boys, so I hardly ever get bitten. One difference I've noticed between me and them (apart from the obvious!), is I can often catch a mozzie in the act and squidge it before it bites, whereas they can have 3 munching away on them and not notice.

By accident I found a 'cure' against the itch of mozzie or sandfly bites. It works for me, no idea if it works on someone else though.
I just stick a piece of duct tape (not sure of the spelling, but it's the broad tougher tape) on the bite, the itching stops within a few minutes and stays away as long as I keep the tape on!

Thanks Nienke, but if i tried that at the minute, i would look like a reel of duct tape!

Bought some mozzie nets today, so fingers crossed!

I am thinking of trying some calamine lotion to take the itch away from the bites as it is relatively cheap. The itch from the bites reminds me of Chicken Pox when I was a child.

The Mossie/sand fly's here seem to like the feet and lower legs, the itch from the bite seems to appear several hours or even days after the bite and can go on for a long time.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I've been eaten alive! First time I've been bitten i think since we moved here.

I wouldn't care, but I was at work all day yesterday (in a bakery) wearing long fecking trousers. I now 4 volcanoes on my right leg and ankle. I've already gone through a can of that freezing spray stuff and I'm considering sawing off my leg :wah

Here - have a look at this...

www.mosquitoclick.com (http://www.mosquitoclick.com)

I'd never heard of them 'til we came to Oz.

They are BRILLIANT.

Cost me $20 and worth every cent.

Looks like they have an online shop too.

Good luck and happy clicking.

How did you find out duct tape cured the itch? The mind boggles....

Sharon - can you get the B1 online cheaper? My Pro-life anti bite tabs are $14.00 for 60 in the health shop here and I stocked up on Nature Made B1 when I was in the US recently. (US$3 approx for 100 in WalMart)

When I got bitten before I used to dab 100% pure lavender oil on them. The bites always made me feel like I wanted to attack them with an apple corer to relieve the pain.

Have you tried Robocan to kill the little blighters? I've got one going at the moment because we have had a big problem with ants - I'm using the "natural" version, and we seem to have a lot less insects in the house now.

I was putting some duct tape on my son's wart (doctor's advise!), when I just thought, hey let's try it on one of my (many) mozzie bites. And voila, it worked!
