Hi,
Can anyone give me a view on how easy it is to get things like vegetarian sausages in New Zealand.
Our eldest daughter isn't too keen on what I would call real vegetrarian food but likes things like Linda McCartney sausages and Quorn.
From what I can recall from our visit last year things like that were not readily available in the big supermarkets. Has this changed?

Its still a very carnivorous country but having a bbq with a group last weekend I did notice a veggie burger on the grill so they are about. Looked quickly in pac n save yesterday for someone else though and couldn't see them there but they don't have as wide a range as some of the other supermarkets. There are a lot of health food and alternative shops about though.

There are veggie burgers, sausages etc available in all big supermarkets. What you might find is that there is less frozen etc food available compared to what youre used to as most people cook from fresh. Lots of fresh fruit and veg is available and very affordable so with a decent vegetarian cookbook you'll find it easier and cheaper to be vegetarian here than in the UK guaranteed.

p.s. You definitely won't find brands like quorn and linda mcartney though. Or certainly, I have never seen them and wouldn't expect them to be imported here.

I recall several earlier discussions re Quorn, and I don't believe anyone ever found it in NZ.
Business opportunity there for someone, eh?
All the best, Rae

I'm fairly certain you can get a range of vegetarian food in some supermarkets, probably Foodtown or New World being your best bets.
I also think the The Mad Butcher (http://www.themadbutcher.co.nz) chain sells vegetarian 'meat' products too.

My brother in law is from New Zealand and his whole family is veggie, I will give him a ring and ask for you.
Hope to get back soon. I have suggested he get his mum to join the site, as someone who has been over there for years, Went, came back and realised that Uk was definately not what she wanted, so returned to NZ, and now a real Kiwi. I will try and get her on, as like Beach Kiwi she should have some really interesting info. Also been through the problems of her kids moving to Europe, I came back to NZ, my brother in law still in UK.

With the number of Asian food outlets and speciality shops around you should be able to get hold of Tofu over here. Is that like Quorn?
