Are sand flies and mossies a constant problem in NZ or are they just at certain times of the year in certain places.

For the 5 months we've been here in Chch and can say so far no problem..... however when in Murchesion last Dec the sandflies had feast and a half on my legs :wah ........ so reckon in answer .......yes certain times certain places

Been in Christchurch for quite a time and haven't so much seen (or heard) a mozzie. No sandflies either. I think they're mainly in the west.

The sandflies drove us nuts on the West coast and on the mountain passes on our recent trip round the South Island. They were better but not completely absent on the East coast. Biting things are one of the downsides to NZ. There are far more mozzies too. Most of them live in my vegetable patch I think.

certains place yes like springs junction...and once caught us surprise, Lake ellesmere!! thought it was lovely place for picnic, we got out car and last 30sec before ran back into car with swamp of sandflies following us :laugh

We will soon be in New Plymouth on the north island any body got any info on bugs to expect to find there.

We live just north of Wellington - in a town - and I was eaten alive last night sitting on my wee deck at 9pm!
Had to come in in the end as I couldnt find my spray stuff in the blue bottle that I've forgotton the name of... lol
Even after 12 years of living here - they still see me as fresh blood I think!

Are sand flies and mossies a constant problem in NZ or are they just at certain times of the year in certain places.
I've not yet had a problem with sandflies on Central Hawkes Bay beaches ... but that figures because it's paradise here :p
