Ohhh, where do I begin?
Here's a few sports that happen just around my wee village in inland Canterbury:
1. Rugby (of course!)
2. Tramping - lots of walking tracks, tramping is called hiking in the UK/Europe
3. Kayaking - many people use the Waimakariri river to kayak - in Chch they do it on the Avon or sea-kayaking
4. Mountain biking - some fabulous tracks around Chch
5. Up the road is a famous "bouldering" park which is a bit of a free-climbers mecca - that could be a new sport for you!
6. Road cycling - sooo many people around don Lycra and whizz up and down the hills round Chch or along the long flat roads of the Plains.. I've never seen so many people on bikes in Lycra :laugh (all ages too!)
7. Tennis
8. Skateboarding
9. Lots of skiing and snowboarding - the schools even do trips out for the day- there are around 7 resorts within 2 hrs of Chch.
10. Ummm, I was trying to round it up to 10...
Help me someone!!

EDIT:
10. If you live in Chch you can join a lifesaving surf club or sailing or kite surf or windsurf or, or, surf...... :D

21. Why has no-one mentioned zorbing? I can't wait to try this out.
We also watched the following when we went on New Brighton beach-
-kite surfing/para surfing - basically surfing across the water with a small parachute
-kite boarding - scateboard with big wheels using a parachute
-don't know what it's called, but sailing a boat along the beach on big wheels - that looked fun:D

A friend of mine helps run the Cantebury Lacrosse team. Even though it's a minority sport, there is a league of teams
Other sports include :
hockey
basketball
netball
triathlons
ridiculous endurance events (e.g. coast to coast)
fishing (is that a sport?)
sailing
surfing
Basically, any sport you can think of and then some more

I can highly recommend the canyon swing near Queenstown - makes jumping of the Sky Tower seem tame

While we're on the subject - I fancy doing some organised pot-holing or caving while we're in the N.Island (now that I can actually fit through a hole! :o ) - I remember a thread with an experience near Rotorua?
