Hi,

I have been looking for an IT role in NZ for well over a year now, and visited in March last year, to show my face. I signed up with loads of agents, and applied for hundreds upon hundreds of jobs. The only agent who appeared to be doing anything meaningful to represent me and help me get a job was RecruitIT. They got me more interviews than anyone else, in roles that were right, and even got me a job offer (2 days ago!)

So if you are struggling, sign up with RecruitIT - http://www.recruitit.co.nz/ (tell them I sent you - I don't get anything). They really do seem to be the best.

I'm also in IT and planning to settle in NZ next year. If I look at the seek website I see lots of IT jobs. Why did you take so long to get a job offer?

since we're talking about recruiters, is it professional for example, the recruiter will represent me for the job in X company and then I will also personally go to X company and also pass my CV to them? Is that ok or does that look unprofessional? Thanks in advance...

I wouldn't do it, and really, the HR people of the company should refer you back to the recruitment agency.

There are occasionally grey areas. I have contacted people directly and then later found out that the agency I signed up with later dealt with this company's recruitment. But they said that they could prove that we've been in touch before I signed up with the recruitment agency, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck with the jobhunt. I'm kind of going off recruitment agents and try to apply directly, see if that is more promising.

Good luck,

Daniela

i have signed up with these all - Recruit IT, Sapphire, D&R, Real Recruit, Madison, HVP, Candle, Hays, Neal Andrews, Beyond, Kelly, Icon, Vision and have got nothing concrete at the mo. Yes there are loads of jobs online almost 5000. I don't understand how they are filling in these? as most kiwis are looking work in AUS, US, and UK as they pay is more. this all does not compute. so much for the disaster of the $1m webite of the govt which was a failure.!

Hi!

I thought I'd tag my question on to this thread as you may be the best people to answer this, hope that's ok. I am a database developer (SQL Server and Oracle ) and managed to secure PR last October, but found all the agencies I have contacted have said something along the lines of ‘let us know when you get there’. As I don’t have a huge stack of cash, I can’t really burn my bridges in the UK to move out without knowing if I will get a job, but assuming I do go to NZ for a shortish trip and have interviews, I wouldn’t be in a position to take up a job, cos I’d still have to come back to burn said bridges. I’m wondering what to do now. How have other people managed to secure an IT job while outside of NZ?

Cheers!!

Clare

Go direct to the large companies and forget the recruitment agents if you have PR. Alcatel def take people from abroad. Surf their websites. More likely to get a phone interview.

Don't suppose you have powerbuilder do you?? OH place is desperate for people look up Bravura Australian company based in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.

Your mistake is treating the recruitment process the same way as you would in the UK.

Don't work with lots of agents, because they all work on commission, and if another agent has already registered your CV with an employer the next agent is less likely to be paid. They soon find out because the HR departments let them know if they have already seen your CV. It doesn't take much to start them looking for pastures new, and your left wondering whose working on your behalf (no-one).

You can help them get around it my telling the agent that you have already approached an employer through another agent, and authorising them to do a fresh approach, and that you do not allow the previous recruitment agent to represent you anymore. They will take your email to the company and use this to leverage the commission for them.

Another problem is that some employers do not pay commission at all to an agency if they already have your CV. They do however use the fresh approach to stimulate them to check your CV against a target role. Again the agent doesnt get paid.

Finally, the commission isnt paid until you start work, so if they place you from overseas, they dont get paid that month, which causes cash flow problems, and the slighest hickup on your arrangements ends up losing them the commission. Therefore don't expect to be put up for a job if there's a half way decent local candidate.

To get the best solution, offer the agent your exclusivity for a defined period. That means you are in the bag, and the employer is the issue. They are then working for you. Reserve for yourself the very top companies you think are most likely to hire you. You are more likely to get a better salary if they aren't also paying the agency commission.

I think many companies hold back from external recruitment until they have exhausted the internal market, and any contacts they have. If you can get a chance to talk to the hiring manager, you can possibly change this in your favour.

You see a similar thing with real estate agents. They "own" you once you have accepted a ride in the car, and heaven help any other local agent who then tries to talk to you. The friendly ride around the town to show you all the houses in your price bracket is actually used to register their name against yours for those houses, so they get a share in the commission as the first to introduce you to the property. This can be disturbing if you are used to the more team-based selling of the UK.
