just thought i'd ask, does anyone know of a good short term (2 weeks ish) hotel / motel / home stay place in tauranga where we could lay our heads until we get a rental ?

Alot of the caravan parks have chalets, that might work out cheaper than a motel.

We have stayed a couple of times at the Tauranga Motel which is in easy walking distance of everywhere. Not over cheap but is very clean and has a little kitchenette and laundry - and very nice people running it.
