Hello everyone.
I wonder if someone out there can give some advice?Husband has been offered a job working at glenbrook steel works in the franklin district of Auckland, but may also be commuting to auckland as well with the job.Are there any nice areas to rent in this area regarding good schools for an 11 year old boy.We come from a small rural village in nottinghamshire.
any advice would be appreciated about areas to live and also the steel works itself

No advice available but well done on the job offer and welcome to probably the best forum that's ever straddled two hemispheres!

Pukekohe is a village that is close and I believe a lot of the workers live in. Depends on how much time is spent in Akl and how much down at the plant? Lots of nice areas over on the Eastern beach area - I'd avoid Manukau.

My brother in law's brother is a senior director there - only ever met him in the UK before we left, but a really nice guy.

The best area is Pukekohe. It is the largest town in Franklin, although by UK standards small. It has the best schools by far and all the local amenities. The price of housing is very cheap and it is only a few Kms to The steel mills. It is a thriving town and one of the "best to live in and best to invest in". Property remains cheap. It is also close to the motorway and can be in the main shopping etc in Auckland within the half hour/45 mins. But has none of the hassle of the city - it is very rural feeling. We now live in Bucklands Beach which is in the city, but nearly chose Puke (Pukie is the local nickname) only the commute put me off as I work in the City

As well as Puk'e there is Waiuku. Am led to believe there is quite a few Brit's within that locality.

World2007,

I'm from South Wales, currently employed in the steel industry; if you don't mind answering; how did you partner get the position with the works? Our ITA was submitted last week and now need to find a position.

Regards & Good Luck

I was talking to someone last week that lives in Howick whose hubby works at the mill. He finds the commute fine. apparently they emply quite a few brits.

if you get the right area you could have your child in either Macleans, Howick College or Botany Downs college, all of which have good reputations, Macleans considered to be the best, but the most expensive area to buy in.

good luck....
