not sure what to do about white goods, i hear they are dear and that washing machines are mainly toploaders, which hubby thinks are not as good as front loaders, we leaving our fridge/freezer, washing machine/tumble dryer behind as they fitted into units. so been looking at getting new ones (but making them looking used) and shipping them over to try and save money. has any one wished they had taken them over or regreted shipping them over.
there so much to think about and do just want to tick this off my list and have one more thing to stress about.
many thanks

You are right that washing machines are normally top loaders, which aren't generally as economical to run.

Would definitely recommend getting front loading washing machine and tumble dryer (wish we had brought dryer with us) as they will definitely be cheaper than in NZ (and more choice).

If possible would definitely connect them up and give them a couple of goes just to make sure that they are working without any problems (difficult to take back later). They don't have to look used, just to have been used (even once will do).

Would also try to get a make that is also available in NZ such as Bosch.

You can go online to see what they would cost in NZ e.g. check out Ferrit: Laundry Appliance (http://www.ferrit.co.nz/43394.html) for brands and prices.

Also worth doing a search on the forum for 'white goods' as it has been discussed many times before.

Friends of ours recently went out. They bought their washing machine out there and it is a front loader. They said that some things are dear but if like them you have a bit of initial cashflow that there are real deals to be had. They went to one place (I think it was Harvey Norman) and because they were paying cash and wanted a few things they were able to do deals on everything they bought.

We bought a Zannussi washing machine and a Dishwasher with us. We didn't even unwrap them, just put them in the container and shipped them out. And we'd do it like that again.

The NZ top loaders are quite big, quite expensive, and you loose the ability to put bench (work) top over them because of the lid.

We brought over our hotpoint condenser tumble dryer and front loader washing machine with us from UK. Unfortunately both items have gone bang in the past 2 months (but they were fairly old and very heavily used). Don't regret bringing them though as we got a good 6 months use out here so less initial expenditure and if they cost virtually nothing to bring by the time you fill a container anyway. We replaced our washing machine with an equivalent 8kg model and it cost nearly $1500. We couldn't afford to replace our condenser tumble dryer with an equivalent model, so opted for a standard 6kg dryer with hose but it was still about $900. There are cheaper models available than these (it is just an example) but both have a larger weight capacity than your average sized machines...hence the price.

When we sold our house and were negotiating, to get closer to our asking price (which we didn't get), they wanted the white goods.

So I guess we'll have to buy new in NZ. It's a shame as we had a top of the line bosh washer dryer. Although 2 kids under 2 have put at least 100,000 miles on it!
