Having just got back from our first trip to New Zealand I thought I would share with you an amusing tale.
I work in the media and had contact last year through phone and email with a producer from the NZTV. I mentioned our plans and our trip over and asked if he wanted to meet up for lunch. He instead, in true Kiwi fashion, invited my husband and I over for dinner with his family. It was quite nerve-wracking as we didn't know these people at all. I bought a nice bunch of flowers and a really decent bottle of wine and as I left our rented Christchurch cottage armed with the flowers my husband confirmed he had the wine. We arrived and hubby handed the wine to the producer's wife and led us into their kitchen/diner. I suddenly heard my husband say "Oh my God I'm so sorry". I turned around to discover that my husband had brought with him and handed over, the already open and half drunk bottle of wine, that had also been in the fridge of our cottage. I was mortified. Fortunately they made a joke about thinking it was some strange UK custom and the evening went really well. I'm just grateful hubby spotted it as I am sure she would have kept diplomatically quiet. :p
