I have asked this before but nobody seemed to be able to help me - I have a dsl modem here in South Africa - how would I know if it would work in New Zealand - am wondering if it worth my while to bring it with me - Does anyone know how I check whether it would work in NZ.

Tks again'

I second this question. I am from the US...can I use my 120V 60Hz broadband (DSL) modem in NZ?

It may work ok, but for what they cost, buy something like a D-Link DSL-504T. It'll be the correct voltage, frequency, compatible with the telephone network, and have the right plugs on it.

You can then run several PC's over a small network. This means you can also have each PC with it's own Skype account and have reasonable conference type calls on skype without everyone needing to shout into a common microphone.

If your modem is simply that (doesn't incorporate a wireless router as well) then I would agree with PeteS.

As NZ mains is 240V 50Hz you would need a different transformer or also a step-up transformer from 120V and as the mains plug wouldn't fit nor would the telephone connection (would need an adapter) it seems too much trouble for what it is worth.

That said, most broadband plans in NZ offer a free modem with their connection packs so you won't need to bring it anyway.

Oh that's right - about the broadband modem being supplied by service provider. Same here in the US. How about a wireless router? I have a Linksys WRT54G (120v 60hz of course). With transformer and plug adapter, would it work in NZ? That leads to another question: are US network cables compatible with NZ? e.g. if I did bring the wireless route, could I connect it to the DSL modem given by the NZ broadband service provider?

Thanks...

That's exactly the same router that I have :nice1 and it of course works without problems in NZ.

You would need a suitable power supply or transformer (would think that you could just buy a new universal one from Dick Smith Electronic) that would be simpler than buying a step up transformer and plug adapter?

Yes, the network cables are standard so no problem connecting it to the NZ provided modem.

Thank you so very much for your help - thats another thing going to be donated to someone who can make better use of it here - and I will get sorted that side.
