Hurrah - I've found a lovely rental, and might be able to move in this weekend (or next). However, my furniture is going to be in the container for another 3-4 weeks, and this is an unfurnished property, so I need to get some temporary stuff sorted... I'm hoping my new employer will sort out the basics for me (as part of their package), but please can you suggest the best place to buy the following. Price is most important here! Cheap & cheerful will do for now, I can always upgrade later!
- steam iron, and ironing board
- cordless kettle
- crockery, pans & dishes, cutlery, general kitchenware
- portable TV
- telephone
- bedding
There is bound to be more, but this is all I can think of for the moment... thanks!

Cheapest place is almost certainly going to be the warehouse where you can get all the items listed.
Briscoes can be quite good but only when they have a sale on (which seems to be every week?)
Also check out Dick Smith Electronic as another choice for TV and Telephone.

have you tried looking at any rental places for some of the electrical stuff?
We hired some things from Central rentals in Palmerston (not sure if its a nationwide company or not) Might be worth pricing up before you buy.
If you buying extra bedlinen, do it in white, at least that way you can always use it as spares later and it will match anywhere! Arbuckles have decent quality stuff and not too expensive when the sales are on.

When I came over I was in the same situation. I went to The Warehouse, The Warehouse, Where everyone gets a bargain....... It's cheap tat, but it works in the short term and it appears that's what you need.

LV Martin down near Wellington is great for electrical stuff and they'll do a deal if you're paying cash :nice1
Kitchenware and bedding is probably best from Arbuckles if you're after decent quality that'll last. Warehouse if you want it cheap and not to last, think bobbles on the sheets for the bed after a few washes :uhoh

Warehouse or K - Mart.
Don't buy it in Briscoe's unless the sale is on. Even then you might get a better deal in the bargain bucket bins in places like Farmers. :nice1

Forgot about KMart, there aren't that many stores around but there is one in Porirua and does stock most things that you want.

Thank you everyone... some great ideas for me to check out at the weekend :)
It's not quite as easy as just wandering down to Tesco....
For some unknown reason, I managed to leave my pans behind in the packing upheaval, so I will be looking to buy some decent heavy guage stainless steel pans in the near future. But the rest... cheap & cheerful is fine!

Good luck!
I'm really struggling to find some reasonably priced ones, so would appreciate an update when you find some please. :nice1

Why not rent everything untill your furniture arrives, why waste extra money on buying cheap stuff that you have to find a place for when your stuff arrives. Companies like www.rentessentials.co.nz do basic homeware rentals like crockery, cutlery, linen, small appliances, pots etc and www.mrrental.co.nz rent out large appliances like fridges, washing machines etc. We used them and they were excellent!!:raebanana:raebanana:raebanana

Decent pans cost a fortune down here! Ours aren't too bad, but will have to replace them in ones or twos I think.
Briscoes does indeed have a sale every weekend, so it is great when it coincides with what you want.
You will find yourself getting stuff here and there, but that is part of the fun!!

Although not cheap we bought the Stoneline pan set 7 months ago and it is the best set we have ever bought. With the special offer it works out cheaper than the UK for the same product. You can use the frying pans without any oil and I would imagine they will last a lifetime .
