Having squirrel like tendancies, :yes I have masses of paperwork. old bills etc and I was wondering if anyone knows what paperwork we have to keep ie. bank statements, old mortgage agreements, old BT bills, credit card bills. I could go on as there's masses of stuff. :(
Not wanting to fill a container with rubbish I would like to shred it all - but I suppose I need to keep final bills (BT, gas , elec)but what is the minimum anyone has taken with them?
Just thinking of all the poor trees :no

I have no idea what you should take, but I can tell you what I did take, which was the last 12 months of every single household bill. For my bank acounts and mortgage, I took all the statements going back for the last 5 years (which was probably overkill, but I didn't have a shredder and it was easier to pack them).
I also brought all my payslips, P45 and P60, plus my pension papers, and all communication from HMRC. I brought all of this on the plane with me. But I am very anal - I'm sure you don't need as much....
Edited to say there's more! I also brought all the documents from when I bought my flat (which I still own), plus about 5 copies of my birth certificate (long one) and five copies of my marriage certificate.
Basically, I brought everything....

Hi
I kept every single P45 and P60 and letter head for us both for employemnt purposes and about 6mths (if that) of houselhold bills, as well as the usual birth certificate, marriage, kids red medical book. I also brought anything on my little ones education in case i needed it too.
I carried these on plane with me too, was conscious of all my private business going astray!

In a flurry of last minute packing, I chose not to bring my bank statements with me (apart from the most recent one or two). This was a mistake, as in order to get a mortgage they really need to see at least a years worth of statements...
Thankfully I left them with my excellent neighbour for shredding, and she managed to retrieve them from the shredder to send on to me :)

Perhaps this varies from bank to bank? I was told I really should try to get at least 6 months worth of statements, and a year would be better...

you could keep your final household bills if you were really interested, but I don't see much use for them here in NZ ...
bank statements could be useful as a financial record perhaps for mortgage applications - although we didn't really need them either ...
most useful things are certificates/legal documents - birth/marriage/tax/educational/financial
and anything business related ...
-> these were the most useful for immigration purposes ...
I accidentally packed my car log book into the shipping container (a duplicate can be purchased) nevertheless, the in-laws were happy to use the car until it was sold ...

Same here....plus we paid the 2 pound (no pound sign on keyboard) fee to get a copy of experian credit reference....which we did get asked for when we bought a car.
We also left hard copies of all our important documents with relatives in UK...just in case....and had scanned copies on a disc too.
