Hi,
I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking for a few weeks. I am considering moving to NZ with my wife and I was curious about the general feeling/presence of adult related business / services. Is prostitution legal? If so, do you feel like you can see it around (street corners, business window banners, etc.). What about the adult entertainment industry? Are there clearly obvious strip clubs/adult video stores? Or is it more discreet? What about by region? Are there more or less sleazy areas of NZ?
I know it's a strange question, but not one that I see has been discussed (hopefully because it's a non-issue).
Thanks,
Rob

Can't help with much of it but there is a shop in our local town which is quite blatantly an adult shop judging by the window display! Not overly offensive - more quite funny but I wouldn't want to walk past it with my 5 yr old - who knows what questions might arise! They were asked to tone down their Christmas window display by the local council. They also advertise on local radio which seems strange to me but then quite a few NZ adverts seem strange to me.

What I found odd on our trip to NZ at Christmas was that every evening from 8.30pm the commercial break on TV included an advert for a Vibrator. The watershed must be 8.30pm in NZ. As we were on holiday, some nights the children were still up at 8.30pm. Thankfully they didn't seem to notice.......I was dreading them shouting, "Mummy, what's a vibrator?", at a public moment!
You don't get "adult" TV commercials in the UK until after midnight and even then only on some of the satellite channels.
Doesn't answer your question though, sorry.

We came acroos it by accident on our 2nd day here having parked up on Manchester Street, Chch , we weree looking for internet cafe honest guv, I spied "a lady of the night" and quietly pointed it out to clare who then pointed out another one !!!!
There seems to be the full works here if you'll pardon the expression, Adult entertainment shops on one of the main streets in the centre through to "massage parlours " and "strip joints"
All very open but not on the same level as say Amsterdam :cheers

Well we have a brothel just up the road.... just looks like a normal well maintained residential house, labelled up as a chinese massage clinic.... can't say I have seen any ladies hanging around on street corners though, and I think thats because it is legal here, they can set up a brothel openly, rather than have to sneak around on the streets after dark.
There has been some hoohaa about making them move to industrial areas rather than residential, but then apparently they cant find suitable accommodation. I think that was Auckland city council?
You get adverts for sex toys & shops on the radio too.
Talking of prostitution, did anyone see the channel 5 series Respectable, they just showed it on UKTV here, we didn't know whether to laugh or cry at times, was a good series though.

We found out about the NZ 'watershed' on our first night in the camper. OH and me were relaxing with a glass of vino whilst children got ready for bed. We were getting into the 'wow we're here, we're under the stars with Mount Cook and the Lake and how wonderful' when we began to tune into the noises from the camper rather than the quiet outside. A certain amount of heavy breathing followed by our two scrabbling to get the remote to change channels as they were disgusted! Needless to say we didn't spend much more time watching tv.:laugh

LOL
We often drive home via manchester St in Ch chif we have been in to town for something - blatant prostitution & soliciting . Street workers anywhere are likely to be funding drug habits . There seems to be no shortage of brothels , sex shops or dodgy radio adverts about erectile dysfunction in Christchurch ...

Sleazy, tasteless "Hustler" magazines on the racks right beside the general readership magazines in the little postal/bank shops.

Before we left for UK last year, we notice that they had started selling single use vibrators in our local Tesco....I am not kidding. They were also placed on the bottom shelf where my kids could have picked one up....no sure how I would have explained that one to them :uhoh

I remember watching Border Patrol, and the Customs officers going to brothels to arrest illegal workers, so if I remember right you can't do it on a working holiday visa anyway!

Must say I haven't seen any ladies of the night around, but then I tend not to be out at night.
The TV and radio advertising is a lot more in your face than I was used to in the UK, particularly adverts for specialist shops and, as was mentioned before, clinics for men with erectile problems,
Smiler

and adverts on the TV for viagra! Lots of fuzzy shots of couple's swimming under waterfall (someone explain that one to me please, bbrrr) dancing by a lake, sitting on the floor feeding each other a take away!
Lots of commercials on Palmy's radio for erectile dysfunction too, all day long........................
Single use vibrators???? haahah couldn't decide which smilie to use!

as was mentioned before, clinics for men with erectile problems,
I'm just waiting for the day our little girl asks me what premature ejaculation is. There's an advert on the radio regularly and she's always singing along to jingles etc. Luckily that ad is just spoken, not sung or she'd be singing along!
ps - nice to see you Specky - hope all's going well.
