With the new legislation requiring GST be paid on goods shipped in if you arrive without the right to reside in NZ I was wondering about something related.
I read on the customs website that a deposit needs to be paid on personal electronics, laptops, cameras and the like, when coming into the country. This is refundable when you leave. Basically anything not clothing or toiletries in excess of $700 value.
Wondered if anyone going in on a visitors visa had had experience with that.
What kind of documentation would I have to produce for bringing a laptop? Proof of age and cost or will they take my word for it?
Is this something they even bother with?
Need to add the extra GST to the budget. :exit

You may also want to read Tourists Additional Allowances (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Arriving+in+New+Zealand/Allowances/Tourists+Allowances.htm)
It says that as long as you can take your personal electronics with you when you go, then you won't be charged.

I should have clarified. Has anyone that has gone in on a visitors visa and then received PR/work permit after arrival experienced this?
From the site it seems that you are charged when you enter the country and have a voucher or something that you can turn in for a refund when you leave.
I'm wondering if this is indeed the case, if this is something customs bothers with regularly, etc.
So, anyone brought a laptop over on a visitors visa?

I'm not sure where this information has come from but we brought in a brand new laptop in our hand luggage on a visitor's visa. No questions asked.

Did you read the link that I posted? It doesn't mention that you will be charged for your personal electronics when you enter the country. It clearly explains what will happen.
I don't think that you have anything to worry about.
