We've got a few door to door shipping quotes from Montana to Wellington. The lowest so far (all amounts in USD) is from Phil at Sterling International, $8900 including terminal handling charges (THCs). The highest is Crown Relocations at $11,400 with the same stuff included. Meyers, LTV, and Rainier Overseas Movers are somewhere in between.
I have to ask my NZ employer to bump up the amount that he'd offered to compensate for our move, which was lower than any of the quotes. In order to do so, I need to know what other expenses to expect besides that covered by the quotes. I'm guessing the replacement cost of our stuff is $10K, so insurance at 3% would be around $300. My question is: How much to budget for customs inspection or quarantine fees, taxes, etc, etc? We are of course going to clean our stuff real thoroughly in an effort to avoid red flags and $ at customs inspections. In the end I need to tell my employer the total expected cost - including some buffer as I'd rather none of the cost come from my own pocket.
Thanks!
David
