Interesting article....

So, we may be sad to learn that the happiest places on Earth do not typically include white sandy beaches, palm trees or clear tropical water. Nor do the reasons for happiness include raw ambition, material desire or envy of any sort. Weiner makes the obvious yet epiphanic discovery that in the happiest places, the things we think important -- money, compromise, trust, culture, among others -- are, but not in the ways we may think.

Helen

you amaze me where you get these links from. And then you go and ask us very thought provoking questions.
For me Happiness is a state of mind where you don't worry about anything by not conforming to what you think everyone expects from you.

I haven't read it yet just off for some more though provoking reading

I kind of agree with you there...but think that happiness is a place or environment that allows you to feel that way. Then of course you want to share it with the people you love most and they are usually the same people who love you just as you are anyway :)

Happiness is when you are comfortable with yourself.
If you are sitting comfortably, you don't have to think about the fact that you are sitting.
If you are dressed comfortably you are not aware of your clothes.
If you are comfortable with other people you don't concern yourself with what they think of you.
When you are comfortable with yourself you can forget about yourself, which allows you to enjoy everything around you...the people, the scenery, the room you are in, the breeze on your skin, the sound of the birds or the buzz of the city.
And this can happen no matter where you are in the world.

Interesting thoughts folks.

My take is a little different in that I think the happiest place on earth is in your head... if you're not happy in your head, you're not happy anywhere. You take your troubles with you wherever you are, no matter how beautiful/tranquil/ideal, so a place won't make you happy unless you're already happy in yourself.... if you're happy you see places, and people, differently and experience things differently (imo).

I say this from a perspective of suffering from depression since my early 20's, whereby I know that I can feel both extremely happy and devastatingly unhappy, without moving an inch, and even having my loved ones with me doesn't help.

I don't think this is very different to the point that this weird ourquest chap (?) was suggesting.
But I would like to know whose head you are referring to because I think we'll all apply for residence there.

"He begins in Switzerland, high on the happiness scale. Efficiency rules: Toilets cannot be flushed after 10 p.m.,"

I never heard that before. This guy has fantasy!

Moorf, you take me back to a favourite quotation (can't remember by whom):

You see things as you are not as they are

If you're feeling good, everywhere is happy.

Happiness is being content with what you have. Not all the time wanting and must have. This covers a multitude of stuff. Its all in the head. But some people cannot be happy, i think its the way they are programmed troughout their upbringing.etc.
