First time on the forum, but what an amazing source of information.
We are in the initial stages of our dream to move to NZ. after two holidays in NZ over the past 3 years we have finally decided this is what we want to do.

I am a graphic designer (age 35) with a HND and BA (hons) degree in graphic design from the university of East Anglia and over 10 year experience.

My husband (age 39) is an electrical engineer with a HNC in electrical engineering together with a BA in social history and an MA in history from the university of Leicester - over 10 years experience in electrical engineering with experience in high and low voltage generators and the relevant qualifications.

My question is can we claim the points for all theses qualifications or just those relevant to our careers?, what points would this give us? who we be the main applicant? is it worth applying?

Look forward to hearing your responses and thanks to everyone for making the forum such an invaluable resource for the likes of me!

You will most probably have 150 points with your partner (20 for partner). As your IT degree is in absolute skills shortage list, and over 10 years experience will get 30 points plus bonus points as well.

Look at the immigration New Zealand site, it explains everything.

You can claim for the qualifactions, and you get bonus points if they're relevant to any job offers you might have. Also, if they're in certain areas you get even more bonus points.

To do a quick assessment, try his link:

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/pointsindicator/

You might find the points differ depending on who the principle applicant is. Generally, the degree applicant would score more than a HND applicant, but because of the way they work it out it need not work out that way.

Thanks guys
I have tried the points calculator and every time I enter the details I seem to get something different, I as the graphic designer with a degree only get 125 points my husband the electrical engineer with a HNC gets 135 points not sure this is correct but I think this is the route we are going down with him as the main applicant.
Wish us luck!

The points score varies because it's not just a matter of what the qualification level is, but what area it's in. An actual EOI score would be different, as you might be able to identify either your qualifications, experience or job offer as being in an area of shortage.

There are a lot of contingencies, so it's best to try to tackle an actual EOI before deciding. The NZIS website is designed to let you create multiple 'draft' EOIs, and submit one when you're ready, so you can play around with EOIs and save them, and see which one works best.

My husband is also an electrical engineer. He plans the replacement of substations and has recently moved onto circuit loads and ensuring they are capable of taking additional loads if one circuit goes down.
He has a HND in electrical engineering. When he applied he had his quals tested but he used his electrician qualification also.

We got PR no problem.

Good Luck
