Have you got transport?
If so there's the big LV Martin on Ngaio Gorge for electricals. If you can get out to Porirua, there's a large selection of electrical shops near the huge Harvey Normals, which also has a big furniture and electrical section. I found these shops better than Lower Hutt.
If you don't have transport, there's an LV Martin under the State Tower, but it's a poor selection IMHO.
Otherwise there's DTR rentals, if you don't want to buy just yet.
There was also a good second hand shop, which sold fridges etc. I'm sorry I forget the name of the road but it's near the Sally Army on Kent Terrace.
I'm a bit rusty on wellington shops but HTH.

For inner city Welly, try Tory St. It has a Harvey Norman, a Big Save Furniture, a Noel Leeming, a Mitre 10 Hardware and a Warehouse all within 150 metres of each other. Tory is just off Courtenay Pl, half way down.

There is Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming on Tory Street, south of Courtney Place. There is also a furniture store there.
There are also a bunch of furniture stores on Thorndon Quay.

Hi Lindsey
We brought our electrical things from Harvey Norman in Porirua (think they will all be the same) but we got loads of discount when we asked we brought lcd & normal tv, house phones etc & on top of the the discount we got free tv units with both which saved us a few dollars aswell. So where ever you go don't be afraid to ask for discount.

There's an LV Martin in the centre of Wellington, near Lambton Quay, not sure what they have in there though as we've always gone to the out of town one.
Don't be embarrassed about asking for a discount, we used to be terrible at it but now always ask, especially if we're paying cash for things :nice1

Other useful stores to know about in the inner city are: Dick Smith Electronics (Vivian St, Featherston St and Manners Mall), Farmers in Cuba Mall and Briscoes in Taranaki St. All within a 15 min walking radius. Good tip if you are shopping by car is to use the Farmers upstairs carpark, entrance in Victoria St. It's much cheaper than a parking meter, and hardly ever full....

Despite it taking lots of time, we have furnished an entire house on trademe. Don't know if you are open to used stuff, but it can save you a bundle. You can rent a moving van for fairly reasonable in Upper Hutt. Use the autobid function to set a limit on your bids on trademe.
We also have found that waiting for sales on items in most stores for new purchases can also save you a bundle. Things are pricey in NZ but shopping smart does pay off.
Good luck,
Wendy
