Hi all,

When applying for a work permit/visa and they request evidence of work experience - what are they looking for? Would a letter from a current employer and pay slips be suitable?

Thanks in advance

We just gave them pay slips, and a job description from my husbands place of work and it was accepted.

If you have a written contract, that would probably help.

My wife got a letter from the HR dept of each of the companies she was claiming work experience for, along the lines of: "I can confirm that Mrs X worked here full-time in the role of xxxxx between the dates of Jan 2004 - present. Love & kisses, HR" on headed paper. I don't think they even verified any of it, just took the letters as proof (she still keeps in touch with most of her old bosses and hasn't heard anything). Other than that (and esp. if you are self-employed) contracts & pay slips should do.

I think I might have a problem to prove my work experience. I lived and worked in US for about 8 years and in Dubai for 2 years. I can prove the Dubai one cos the company still exists. As per the US one, the company closed down and since I did not keep any of my pay slips as I could not carry everything back with me when I left US. How do I go about proving that I have 10 years IT experience. Currently I am working as a project manager on contract basis for a large IT firm in Auckland

Hi

We sent a mixture of different things, as had 20yrs to cover for hubby and one or two had gone bust!

I sent in things like P60, payslips, letter headed correspondene, contracts, etc.

Everything went through with no probs.

You could try the IRS, maybe they have evidence of work for those 8 years in the US, I don't know how difficult/easy that is!

If you paid tax of course....lol

If you are applying for a work visa, they only need a job offer in writing from your new boss here in NZ. If you are going for PR, then yes they want proof of previous work.

If you are going for PR and cannot prove a lot of your last few years of work state that fact on your intro letter you write. If you have a job offer or already work here in NZ, then don't worry about it. If you don't have a job offer but have enough EOI points to spare losing 20 points, then tell them up front you eg. "I cannot prove 6 years of my work experience and I am prepared to lose 20 EOI points."

For me, I could not prove 6 of my 8 years experience! Ouch! So I just told them that in writing. I lost 20 points, but since I was already here working in NZ I was approved for PR. Try your best to secure a job offer before applying for PR if you are around 125 points. Otherwise you might be in trouble with the 100 point minimum requirement.

Good luck mate!
