I know the majority of the programmes are about Oz which alledgedly has a really strict immigration policy and process, but it really gets under my skins when I see people like carpet layers and garage door fitters being given PR, (no offence meant to people in those trades) when I would have thought these were trades most Australians could be trained in and then there are heaps of people busting a gut to try and get a route into Oz and Nz and are a world apart in terms of experience, knowledge and business value.
The guy today didn't even bother getting a job when he went out there and wasn't going to until his wife was happy! Is it just me that this really irritates?
Sorry for the rant, I shall go and lie down somewhere dark.

Watched this one and thought the same. I very much doubt they will 'make it'. In my opinion, people like that don't deserve to make it. I have often thought why don't they train people up? I see lots of trade jobs advertised in both NZ and Oz, but I never seem to see trainee positions advertised, but then again that's the same in the UK!!! If they did do though, I suppose there may be less chances for us!!!!!

We also wondered how this couple had got into Australia without jobs! He was a professional footballer I think but I can't remember what he then trained to do, was it electrician?
He must have bought his way in is all I can think!!!!! Can you do that if you are awash with money and can prove you won't be living off of the country?

Heaps of people busting a gut to try and get a route into Oz and Nz and are a world apart in terms of experience, knowledge and business value.
I know you meant no offence (and none taken) and i am not here to start a row. BUT that awfully sounds like to me that you feel folk in business suits with degrees and nice offices are a class above tradesmen? In fact there a "world apart", clearly more "knowledgeable" and of more "value" ? :no
Its sad to think an attitude of "classes" still exists..
As we are talking "without any offence being taken" :) i feel the almost opposite, rather that the business lemmings in there suits, nice cars and offices (again no offence guys and gals) and there pile of degrees hanging on the wall could be trained with ease from locals, whereas a skilled trade is a highly specialised profession that is passed down from very knowledgeable people.
Anyway i suppose i had better lie down too now! (in the back of my tacky tradesman's van)
PS: For what its worth, us Electricians are "busting a gut" too, if you saw the amount of red-tape we have to go through and college courses we have to redo here in NZ just to be allowed in..........
EDIT: I am not referring to the show on tv as never saw it, just the comments regards "Worlds Apart" & "Getting under Alans skin" :p

Lee good to hear your take and just for the record I don't have anywhere near as many certificates as yourself let alone a degree hence why I will need a job offer!
I fully understand the value and in fact am very jealous of the skills and tradesmanship of what I consider to be true tradesman i.e. joiners, plumbers, bakers and possibly even electricians  . However when I see carpet fitters on the Oz equivalent of four grand sterling a month then I begin to wonder what is going on in the world.
For instance for quite a number of years I believe pastry chefs have been in demand i.e up there with nurses etc. However best will in the world is Australia or any country going to go belly up or lose one of its major industries if people don't get pastry or get their carpets fitted as quickly as possible.
I hope I have clarified a little my own view point and it could not be further away from not appreciating the skills of true trades people.

And by the way the garage door guy, as I stated didn't even have intention of working now that he is out there, that's what really irked me. So you and I jumped through hoops to prove your worth (I read about then fun to get your qualifications validated by the way) and he gets through and then says how isn't going to bother working until it suits him and his family.
Oh and while I remember the guy they revisitied on Friday, had gone to Oz (again) on a toolmakers profession (yes highly skilled) and then when they saw him he had given that up and was a trainee mortgage/financial adviser.
Good luck to them all is what I say, but the remainder should have a level playing field that's all.

"Possibly" Electricians? LOL :)
Yup agree that garage door guy sounds an A**
Yup trades can pay well (i stress"can") as i recall a fad in UK a couple of years back when businessmen were giving up there offices to train as plumbers, as they could earn more!

Think I'll move to Oz and fit a few carpets :laugh
I tend to take salaries like this with a pinch of salt, how many people talk up their "worth" to make them feel more important??
Know what you say though guys, if you go with a good work ethic you will get on, but if not, you will struggle.

I saw the one with the tool maker as well. I was soooo annoyed that He in effect had got in under false pretences. I think people should be required to work in their qualifying proffession for at least 2 years after arriving in any country via a skilled visa route, otherwise that country does not become any better off skills wise. I really hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, but to me, being granted pr is a countries way of saying yes, you have askill or trade we value, please come and use it here???
I suppose the flip side could be said of me, that although my oh has a trade that is in short supply, I haven't (I'm admin public and private), so therefore could say no, you cannot come we don't need you???
Swings and roundabouts I suppose

I think we all know it happens but to have three out of five or six where the people contribute very little to the country on the programmes return and them being on TV makes it a little harder to accept.
