Is it possible to get real runner beans in NZ? I mean the ones people grow up poles in the UK, that have red flowers, and you have to string them and slice them when getting them ready to cook? (Not the same as 'sliced green beans' that are what you mostly can buy frozen.) If they're not sold in shops, can you get the seeds to grow them yourself?

yes you can get them here and grow them easily and they are sometimes for sale in New World when in season. not cheap. However I did notice the other day that some enterprising soul has planted them on the entrance to Kepa Bush Reserve in Orakei. As they are on public land I munched a couple as I was walking the dog. (dog was walking me!)
We called the scarlet runner beans in Canada, not sure what they are called here but am sure you could find them in the seed section of the garden stores.

Thanks.:) Off to have a look for where you found them growing wild, in case it's near where my son may be passing! (It's something he's missed, and apparently, not spotted in New World etc..)

its the entrance to Kepa Bush Reseve that is off Colenso Place. Its kind of an access strip from the road to the startof the bush trail. I dont think they are growing wild, someone definitely planted them, don't know if its the park staff, or the neighbouring houses that took advantage of the extra bit of land.
They might be out of season now as its been very hot.

Hi. My neighbour has them growing at the moment - I can see them from my window as I type this. A few beans hanging over my side of the fence ! - and loads of flowers. The plants are approx 6 - 7 feet in height and look very healthy.

They're growing really well in my garden - I got the seeds from the local garden centre. If you plant them now, you may just be in time for a late crop.
