I'm in the midst of getting together the paperwork to sponsor my parents (they are submitting it in 6 weeks! :raebanana ) and I need to have the sponsorship form witnessed and some photocopies of documents such as birth certs etc certified.

Must I use a lawyer or can a policeman/dr do it in New Zealand?

And what costs have you paid for this service?

Cheers

The citizenship form gives details of exactly who can be a witness - solicitors, JPs, MPs and a few others (not doctors or policemen) ; are there no details on the sponsorship form? Our solicitor told us to just bring the form to their reception desk and any lawyer in the office would witness while we waited. No mention of costs but we assume it would be very minimal. Haven't done certified copies in NZ but it shouldn't be that different to the UK (where we got lots done at our solicitors for £10).

My son went to the local JP to have it witnessed and it didn't cost a bean!

For certified copies, my sister took it to a solicitor near where she worked and they did it for free (twice as 1 has disappeared in the post).

We've had quite a few documents certified and witnessed by the local solicitor here. Minimal fee for photocopies usually around a couple of dollars and they usually sign for free :nice1

JPs do it for free (that should be a bumper sticker) - they should be in the phone book... and if not, ring Chch court house and they'll give you a list :)

Our accountant (who's a JP) does it for free. JP's aren't allowed to charge, he told me. :clap

Bet he would if he was doing it in his accountants capacity :laugh

Thanks soo much everyone - I'm off to my local JP tomorrow to get it all signed and sealed and sent off!! :clap

It's actually a very simple process to sponsor parents, takes minutes to fill in the form! :nice1

Not sure the parents are feeling quite so calm ;)

Can someone remind me whether I can use forms printed off the NZIS website or if they must be originals! I can't remember from PR app!!! :o

Hah - the process may be simple, but don't forget you have signed your life away for 2 years. I don't know if my son realises how expensive we might be to support :D
