I would imagine these would be young kiwis seeking better wages and a more busy lifestyle. Where as people who tend to emigrate to NZ seem to be looking for a quieter more out door friendly life style with the trade off being lower wages.

As well as that, almost all young kiwis travel/work overseas for a while, but (says my d-i-l) most come back.

The MAJOR reason so many young people LEAVE NZ (IMHO) is money........
Swifly followed by better career prospects, and a natural curiosity to see the 'rest of the world'.

Yes, a lot do return to their native roots - the grass is not always greener, but I believe Money is the biggest deciding factor for leaving!

I've been in N.Z. for coming up to 7 years now and most of the Kiwis I know who have gone to Oz are family men in the 35 to 45 age bracket.I only know three young Kiwis who left on O.E.and they are all back now.Reasons cited for going are Better Pay,More Work Choices,Better Lifestyle.I've just returned from and interview for a job.The Guy I'm replacing is going to.....???? surprise surprise Oz.He's married one child and and well over 40.Bumped into another ex workmate in town last week he's a South African sparky and he's off to Perth at the end of Feb.He's in the 40 to 50 age bracket too.Why is he going? he said for more Money and better employment opportunities.Sad isn't it.Come on New Zealand pull your socks up!!!!!.

I know of two families (parents late 30s - early 40s, and kids) in the last couple of months that have left. All have left for better pay (both Dads are tradesmen) and better prospects. The Aussie economy is huge compared to NZ's, and the population (potential customers) is about 6 times higher.

Some here seem to consider this to be mercenary, and a narrow view of what's important in life. But these people are doing it for their families, in fact the same reasons most of the people on this forum are moving to NZ.

My partner (Debby) and I moved to Wellington a year ago this month. We considered Oz but after deliberation chose to apply for NZ, for the lifestyle. Had we wanted wealth we would have stayed on the 'TAx Haven' we moved from (Isle of Man). Debby was sent on a business trip to Sydney a few months ago and although she enjoyed the experience the first thing she said on return was " We made the right choice to move to NZ " My younger sister is moving to Perth in April, so we will be able to make comparisons. I will keep you posted.....
