Wasn't sure whether to put this here, or money matters.

This week we took delivery of Colin the pig! He's around 8 weeks old, one of 5 piglets (2 boys, 3 girls) and the only ginger one in the litter. He's come to live in the back paddock and has his own piggy house.

He'd been ringed with a weird amount of ironwork just before he'd arrived (looks very Goth) so he's a bit sore and 'off' men at the moment. Our neighbour ringed him so he doesn't dig up the paddock and cheese off our landlord. :) It should also stop him from digging an escape tunnel and beating a hasty retreat into the wilds of the forest!

Pics are a bit weeny soz!

So far he seems to like it! Mr S has been splitting logs in Colin's paddock again today and Colin is watching him from the shade of the trees.

We'll be keeping him until he's big enough to fill the freezer. OH can't wait to see if he has Hellers (or Danishhhhh for all the UK shoppers!) written all the way through him................. and I need to start collecting pork recipes.

Our neighbour will home kill him for us when the time comes.

My SIL has already started the Save Colin campaign. :)

I'll sign SIL's petition !!! :D

I'd never make a farmers wife D. Just couldn't kill anything that I've had eye to eye contact with.

Funny that because I certainly enjoy eating meat. It looks OK to me when it's in the butchers shop..:roll

Danish bacon butties - YUMMIEEEEEE!!

I agree, love the taste but couldn't do the deed - although that hasn't stopped me getting half a pig and 2 lambs at a time from the local farmer to fill the freezer!;)

Did he charge you for them? If so, can I ask what prices?

Cheers

A bargain.....$70 for each lamb and $150 for half a pig.
All butchered into 2 person friendly sizes and packed into bags (could have asked for the larger joints to be kept whole if feeding more people)

All organic, really tasty and no more than 24hrs since the kill!!

That's very good value! I asked because we'll be selling off 2 halves of a lamb, swapping one half for half a pig and keeping final half for ourselves..

Thanks for the info :nice1

The swap is a local farmer friend :nice1

We haven't yet had a pig for the freezer (had lambs when in Scotland) but been told there's a heck of a lot of meat from them!!

Off to search TradeMe for chest freezer! :exit

Not sure how many of you there are but the leg joints are enormous!! We had ours cut down to make 2 joints - enough to easily feed 6-8 people

God, yes - there's loads! We have some at our house, some at my father-in-law's house, and some at my sister-in-law's house! I have no idea how long it's going to take my husband to eat it all...

Better make that 'Just myself and OH' then; the dogs will love 'possum ice cream'. Do NZ a favour and clear the possums from your land with a 22, pop them in a freezer, wait 3 days and your dogs will love 'em.

.... and the bacon is all yours!

We do have a pesky possum in the garden, but it gives the dogs such great exercise that it's proving invaluable!

Anyway, I'm sure our neighbour will get it eventually - he appears to be on a one-man-crusade to clear the area - and if not we'll employ Mr Smiler who's a dab hand I've heard! :D
