hi new to this forum and would appreciate any info on stokes valley as the rentals seem to be more for your money there and the schools look good we are a young family with one 8 year old lad, is it a nice family area???

Quite a long way from Welly (almost Upper Hutt), but the train service is good. It's a lower income area, don't know anything about the schools, but you could get ERO reports online I think to check them out. The one word of caution is that being low in the valley it suffers from some killer frosts in the winter - on a very cold day in Wellington city it may sink to as low as 3 degrees, but it may be as low as -3 in Stokes Valley/Upper Hutt. Something to bear in mind.....Cheers Bob

Well i live 10mins from stokes Valley, so if you want to recon pics i can go for a drive? lol

I been up there once to look at a rental and i thought the area seemed fine to me, but my Kiwi flatmate says, and i quote "ooh i wouldn't live up there, not pleasant" But then its what you are used to i suppose? I mean i worked in the London Suburbs for years, so Stokes Valley seems great to me, but my Kiwi flatmate grew up on a remote SI farm, so i suppose its everyone's own opinion really.

It looked clean, tidy and reasonable to me, not the best area by far, but far cheaper than the best ones.

Some parts are really scary, other parts are quite nice. The thing is the nice parts are a stones throw from the scary parts.

Personally I wouldn’t live there and I’ve done several of the big cities in the UK.

To me its important to find somewhere you feel comfortable, at home, particularly when you first land, so I think it would be a bit of a gamble to move there. I guess I just think you’ll have enough to deal with so why give yourself more stress for the sake of a slightly cheaper rental.
