I need to understand this before I put my animals through hell. Am I to understand that my dogs will be in little cages for 30 days with no exercise?
This would be so bad for an animal let alone my best friend!
Tell me this is not the case.
If not I will be spending 6 months in Hawaii to avoid this torture.

Use this forums search engine and you will find some links to NZ quarantine kennels that other forum members have used.
I think that may put your mind at rest.

no they are not in little cages, there is an inside area about the size of a large kitchen table, and it has a door to an outside caged area of about 8 X 10 feet possibly? (not sure of the size, going by memory here) but they cannot go outside that area. you can try to get your dog to run around inside the outside area, but its not like running free outside. they can walk around freely from inside to outside etc. and if you are lucky enough to get into Pethaven, your dog will have a view of fields, but if you are at Qualified Pet Service, the animal will have a view of a concrete wall.
I dont know about the others in Levin and christchurch, the ones I have viewed are in the Auckland area.
Its fine for little dogs, a bit harder for larger dogs, but they can manage. My point was they cannot be let outside for a run.

I would be bringing an 11 1/2 year old dog that has arthritis and the idea of him not walking everyday I feel he will seize up.

Take a look at the pet guide on this very site - http://www.emigratenz.org/moving-pets-to-new-zealand.html - or MAFs own site - http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/personal-travel-belongings-and-mail/bringing-things-into-nz/your-pets
Again, where are you coming from? As the above site says.
Cats and dogs coming from Australia, United Kingdom/Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Hawaii and Singapore do not require quarantine, but do require certification and will be inspected for ticks on arrival.
Don't believe scare stories until you find out the facts yourself - the information is easily found on the internet.

His heading says, from Oregon, so it looks as though quarantine is a matter for concern.

Oh, can't find that... from their talk of going via Hawaii I though they may be from North America.
Everyone I know whose had pets in qurantine (including my parents) have always talked very highly of it. If it keeps rabies and other diseases out of NZ I'm all for it.
