In our attempt to get a feel for the place so we know what we're letting ourselves in for, we've watched a whole bunch of Kiwi-made movies. We're now of the opinion that Kiwi film-makers are conspiring to discourage people from going there, since they seem to inevitably paint a picture of people living in wooden sheds, garish wall-paper and carpets, a general lack of 21st century aesthetics and a chronic aversion to vowels. I've also seen about as much of Karl Urban as I ever want to. The fact that the landscape is always stunning mitigates this somewhat.

So I thought I'd give you a quick list of what we watched, whether they were worth the download etc. I've stuck to movies that were actually set in NZ, so no Lord Of The Rings or Kiwi-made movies set elsewhere.

Black Sheep

Quirky comedy-horror flick about an outbreak of killer sheep. Interesting characters and some good one-liners. Special effects by Weta. Set rurally. Worth a watch, with good lolz here and there.

Eagle Vs Shark

Quirky comedy chick-flick about a socially inept girl and her attempts to nurture a relationship with a socially inept boy who is burdend with baggage from the past (played by that bloke from Flight Of The Concordes). Got a bit dull in the middle. Characters were bizarre to the point of grotesque. Only if you're bored. Middle section is set in a town that I thought might be Queenstown, but not sure.

Once Were Warriors

This is supposed to be a classic movie, but we switched it off after 10 minutes. Looked a bit grim. About the plight of urban Maoris disenfranchised by poverty in some of the grubbier parts of Auckland (I presume).

Out Of The Blue

Based on a true story. In a remote and poor South Island town, a loan man suddenly snaps and goes on a killing spree. This film documents the events of the day in realistic detail. Good movie, well worth a watch. Has Karl Urban in it in a truly dreadful moustache. Not many laughs.

River Queen

Epic movie which takes place against the Maori wars. An Irish women has a child with a Maori lover, who then dies in a plague. The child's grandfather kidnaps the boy, forcing him to grow up as a native. As the war heats up, the boy, his mother and his uncle begin to feel themseves torn between the old world and the new. Features Keiffer Suthrland, who always puts in a good effort. Also features stereotypical English 'bad guy' (cringe). The countryside is the real star in this movie. Well worth a watch, as it's a good movie that also help to illuminate some of New Zealand's colonial history.

The Price Of Milk

Quirky (spotting a pattern here) rural faiytale, which floats from one bizarre plot twist to the next without really settling. It's self-consciously lyrical and fey, but starts to annoy after a while. Doesn't even really show the landscape off to much effect. Also has Karl Urban. It's all a bit over the top really.

Whale Rider

Still downloading this, will add to this post once we've watchd it.

Any recommendations for Kiwi films that are set in New Zealand that are worth watching?

P.S. If you can find a torrent of Billy Connolly's World Tour Of New Zealand, that's well worth a watch (8 eps of 30 mins each). That's like a guided tour of both islands with gags. Excellent.

Sounds about right! :D

I did start to watch In My fathers Den, but gave up after ten mins....
looked too depressing.

What about "stickmen", worth a watch and seems to be set around Wellington? Certainly some of the shots are clearly of Wellington City.

Ack, how could I forget "Heavenly Creatures"? Although I saw that years ago, not in this recent bout of film-watching.

Also, wasn't "Sirens" set in NZ, or was it in Oz, can't remember. That one with Sam Neill in it. (Edit: Wiki says Australia)

World's Fastest Indian --- a wonderful heartwarming, and often funny, tale of Kiwi tenacity.

I enjoyed it and can thoroughly recommend it as good family entertainment.

These should all be easily available.

The Piano - large parts were filmed out at Karekare beach in west Auckland.

An Angel at my Table - autobiography of Kiwi author Janet Frame.

Sione's Wedding - all filmed around Auckland. Bit odd watching it and seeing that the streets don't piece together properly. Glenfield Massive!

No. 2 - set in Mt Roskill.

Woodenhead - weird fairytale with a donkey, filmed up in Northland.

The Devil Dared Me To - from the guys who did Back of the Y.

Once Were Warriors is a very good movie. The subject matter is grim but it leaves a mark.
The Piano is one of my all time favourite movies.
Whale Rider is heart lifting.

30 Days and 30 Nights currently showing in the cinemas is a NZ film but I don't do horror. Will have to give that a miss.

Once were warriors gets better after the first 10 minutes, give it another go, I wanted to switch off at first.

We have just really enjoyed series 1 and 2 of "7 periods with Mr Gormsby" which I think is a must-see for all secondary school teachers moving here. It really made us laugh.

I agree with you on Once Were Warriors. I managed to make it to the end, but kind of wished I hadn't. Very well made, very bleak movie. Not really my style.

Scarfies was a fun movie.

Isnt there a sequel, "What becomes of the Broken Hearted"? I read the book and its required reading after once were Warriors because it offers a glimmer of hope. I think its a movie but maybe I dreamed that.

anyway I vote for Number 2. A sweet little slice of NZ life, that the whole family can watch.

I thought Flight Of The Concords was set in the US, even though it featured 2 Kiwis?

Ohhh you wanted scenery... hmm.. umm.. there are two great posters on their agent's office wall featured in the U.S. based episodes :D

I love the one with the title "NZ - Just like Lord of the Rings" :laugh

Yeah, well scenery is preferred. I'm not watching for the exotic accents ;)

I agree Stephen&Julie, Once Were Warriors is and excellent movie, grim, yes but I like that the mother finally pulls herself through it all with some dignity and strength. Plus the problems are very real and anyone moving to NZ should be aware of them.

Well worth getting past the first 10 minutes!

I believe there is a sequel....anybody seen it?

If you like River Queen country, do the Whanganui Journey Great "Walk". It's a 3 day canoe journey down the Whanganui river where they filmed it. The landscape is incredible and you'll feel so far from civilisation (because you are!)

There's a fair amount of scenery in "Goodbye Pork Pie". It's an old movie, but scenery doesn't change much over time.

What Becomes of the Broken Hearted was made into a film. You are really missing out on something if you haven't seen both of them. Alan Duff is a bit of a hero of mine, he tends to tell it like it is (he is part-maori, btw).

Once Were Warriors really freaked my in-laws out before we came here.
