We are thinking about moving to Tauranga/Papamoa and would like to know what it would be like for families also what are some good schools. We have two sons, aged 12 and 9. Does the area have good amenities other than the beach? Just some general info please. Thanks.

don't have any kids myself, but I hear that Selwyn Ridge School (Welcome Bay) is very good. Not a bad area to live in!

Hi Joanna,

I don't have any direct knowledge of Tauranga but I'm sure this subject has been discussed before, a quick search on the Locations thread has thrown up these which might help;

Not sure if any of these threads have info on schools on them, maybe do a search in the Education section for those.

Good luck,
Anneliese

Hi Joanna

My son teaches at Bethlehem College in Tauranga. Semi-private but has an excellent reputation.

Thanks everyone. I will go on all the info sites you have given me. It is mainly the schools issue and which areas are best for that.

We are heading to Tauranga Next week. My two daughters are 17 and 15 and we will checkout the schools in the area. We have been given good reports on Otumoetai but it is zoned so can only attend if in that area. Drop us a pm next week and I will see if we can fill you in on more info.

If the house sale goes through we too will be in Tauranga soon - by mid May hopefully. Out of interest anyone know the correct pronunciation - every time I speak to the recruitment agency they correct my pronunciation ( but then I'm Scottish so maybe my accent isn't helping either!). So is it Taa-ranga or more like Toe-ranga?

Thanks

Rambling,

We will be doing the same thing. I have talked to a couple of realitors but just don't feel good about renting sight unseen. I have to say the ones we look at snap up fast or at least that is what it seems like.

its TOW-ronga,
with TOW as in HOW as opposed to TOW as in TOE. the emphasis is on the first syllable, whereas in the UK we might put it on the second.

the 'ng' is said as a dipthong ... like we would say the 'ng' in 'song'

The local pronounciation is TOW RONGA - sounds like OW
The Maori Pronounciation is TOE RONGA
